East Indian Sculpture and Baroque sculpture: How are they different and how are they similar? After circling the museum for an hour, bouncing from security guard to security guard (trying to find my way to the baroque sculptures) I was finally able to answer that question. The two examples I chose were "Nessus and Dejanira" from the Baroque period and "Loving Couple" from Eastern India. The reason I chose these two specifically is because they both involved a man and a woman, making it more interesting for comparing and contrasting. I also chose five additional pieces to discuss later in my paper.…

The Modern Art Museum is truly a place of awe. Being that it was my first time attending such an extravaganza, I was first amazed by the hundreds of people that were there of all ages and ethnicities. Then I was even more struck at how everyone was filled with a distinct love and passion for the arts, as smiles and camera flashes illuminated every floor at Moma. Aside from these truths, all of the different paintings, drawings, photographs, and their creative nature was also in itself truly astonishing. However, despite all of the pieces of art that I saw at Moma, the famous Henri Matisse works stood out the most.…

By taking a virtual tour through the Cosmic Buddha exhibit, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I was able to observe and analyze the different pieces of artwork and sculptures. Through observing the similarities in the mediums and tones of the painting or sculpture, I was able to identify the various differences between certain pieces of artwork. All things considered, I found a new fondness for the elements involved to construct such astounding pieces of artwork.…
During a recent visit to the San Antonio Museum of Art, I was able to view many pieces and types of artwork. This particular museum exhibits pieces that come from the period of the Ancient Egyptians all the way up to modern art. It was a very interesting experience and one that I would definitely like to repeat in the future. The piece that was most interesting to me was a Roman floor mosaic that depicts The Battle of Lapiths and Centaurs. A mosaic is a picture or pattern created by fixing together mall pieces of stone, glass, tile and other materials (DeWitte, Larmann and Shields 629)…
Amanda Herring, from Loyola Marymount University, came and spoke to us about the Gate Keeper and Key Master Hekate of Lagina. For a little background, the sanctuary of Hekate was structured in the second half of the BC in Lagina Lagina was occupied by a single sanctuary at the time. The only people who lived on the site were people who lived in the temples. Hekate has a conspiracy over her origin. She first appeared in the literature, the Theogany. In this entry of poems, she had the the second most spaces dedicated her poem, being only after Zeus. This shows the relevance and impact she had in the Greek world, at the time. She was said to have been greatly involved in affairs to humans. She helped out all sorts of people, whether it was children, students, athletes, etc. She was not really depicted in Greek art, but when she was, it was only in limited space.…
A group of us Arts and Music students used the day on Wednesday to go into the city to visit the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. It was a cold, breezy day so we were all bundled up in jackets and hats. As we got off the E train and walked toward the museum, its appearance was not what I expected it to be. The museum was an elegant, beautiful building made of what looked to be marble; not the big, brick monstrosity I had expected. Once we walked into the museum, it was even more elegant on the inside. The marble staircase had sculptures on each side leading up to the rotunda where white Christmas lights were strung around the banister in decoration for the Christmas season.…

Hi Charles, I appreciate your post since I think that political aspect is present in art either directly or indirectly. The official goal of the museum that has on display the most controversial exhibition still remains first and foremost the societal one. You are, along with George Orwell, exactly right: “all art is to some extent propaganda”. For example, Alfred Barr’s pure scholarly efforts and fascination with the modern art have produced an unexpected outcome. In the period of struggle with Nazism and fascism, even without direct inferences, the Museum of Modern Art was perceived as “latest and strangest recruit in Uncle Sam’s defense line-up” which mission, according to Chairman of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, John Hay Whitney,…
