Jonah was a prophet and was asked as a command from God, although Jonah did not like the order as it was letting his enemy country regain their sins through him. You cannot run and you cannot hide from God and His will for your life as his presence on this earth is every where. The Lord has a reason for the commands he makes that will always come out of the good and will teach you a lesson. The Lord also gave Jonah another chance at his selfless task and got the chance to rebirth from a lower stage in his life to grow and find his higher nature in life. The storm that God put upon the ship was The Lords way of saying that when believers are disobedient to God, even people who do not believe in can be negatively affected. The lesson of this story is that just because God makes calling for Jonah to preach to non-believers it does not mean that you should resist Gods calling, as God loves everyone and wants to save
