Modern Day Slavery Today
Slavery was made illegal by the emancipation proclamation in 1863. Today, however modern day slavery is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Broken, lost, and barely getting by four billion people around the world are not protected by their legal system which allows perpetrators to commit crimes with little fear of repercussions. The definition of slavery is anyone held in servitude or legally owned by another human being. Today there are 28 million slaves, which is the highest number on record. Although there are many, many types of slavery the most common categories are: forced labor and sex trafficking.
