Abstract
With the development of power system, its stability assessment becomes more and more complicated task. Nowadays, there are various tools to cover this one. With the advance of the technology in monitoring, controlling and measuring, the system security is not only offline but also online calculated. Therefore, many new theories have been published.
The aim of this project is to review the modern tools for power system stability assessment. Firstly, the background of power system stability theory should be presented.
Secondly, the project must cover the tools for transient, small signal and voltage stability assessment. These tools could be not only offline but also online application.

    Wind energy is intermittent by its nature; it is very consistent on an annual basis but varies significantly over shorter time scales and as a result it is necessary to have flexible back up generation sources on standby to cover any sudden drops or increases in its output which adds significant cost to the running of a stable electricity grid (Kessides and Wade 2011) (Hirth and Ziegenhagen 2015). This is because of instantaneous electrical generation and the consumption must remain balanced at all times to ensure grid stability, this variability creates substantial challenges when a large amount of wind energy is integrated into an electrical grid (Hirth and Ziegenhagen 2015). Transmission networks currently deal with outages of conventional power plants and instantaneous changes of electrical demand by compensating with reserve capacity (Zugno and Conejo 2015). The variability of renewable power sources such as wind power, are unlike those of conventional power generation plants but can be partially compensated for in the same way (Chao et al. 2015).…

    Real power reserves will then be further discussed. Reserve is categorized into two, normal operation reserve and disturbance reserve at which it is dependent on the cause of the reserve requirement. It is based on how fast the reserve capacity is available for the system operation. Firstly, the instantaneous reserve consists of frequency control reserve and momentary disturbance reserve, at which available within 30 sec. Frequency control reserve keeps the frequency within tolerance ± 0.1 Hs where used frequency control reserve is after 15mins replaced by fast reserve. Furthermore, momentary disturbance reserve replaces the lost production of tripped units or outages of important transmission lines. The same goes to momentary disturbance reserve at which 15mins is needed for replacing with fast disturbance reserve.
