Modest Proposal Assignment
After reading Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” it is time for you to be the satirist. First think of a major problem in modern society (It can be a domestic or international struggle). Then create an absurd solution but effectively argue that solution with ethos, logos and pathos. Do not be afraid to experiment with so-called experts, fantastic statistics and confusing syllogism (when you come to a conclusion from two different sources). In fact, a strategy you may want to use is to confuse the reader with absurd complexity.
In a 1-2 page typed essay (double-spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman or Calibri size 11 if using
Word 2007), introduce the problem and offer a ridiculous solution. Remember to include pathos when you introduce the problem in order to express the necessity for an immediate solution. Some possible topics to consider are—
(1) Immigration
(2) Healthcare
(3) War in Afghanistan
(4) Taxes
(5) The economy
(6) Global warming
You are by no means limited to the above suggested topics. You may even choose some of the topics proposed for our weekly debates. On the other hand, you will not be penalized for using one of the suggested topics.
In the end, I will be examining how well you argue your ridiculous solution. The best essay will have an incredibly absurd solution while also offering a highly effective rationale. I welcome any innovative strategies, but it may help to use some of Swift’s satirical methods in “A Modest Proposal.”

The second part of the assignment is to prepare a 5 minute presentation to the class that outlines your topic and accompanying proposal. The use of visuals (e.g. Power Point) is encouraged, but not necessary. This will be a great practice for the senior Project Presentations. In the end, your goal is to demonstrate to your audience the necessity of
