Moishe Wiesel's Character Analysis

At the beginning of the book, Wiesel introduces Moishe the Beadle. Moishe is a Jewish man living in Sighet; he then becomes the teacher to Wiesel helping him learn about the understanding of Kabbalah. Soon, however, the Hungarians expelled all the foreign Jews, including Moishe. Several months later he returns and tells everyone that they were going to be killed but nobody believed his story. Moishe was not believed because he was viewed as an outsider since he was a foreigner and even mentally unstable due to his departure and had no evidence of his experience. The people in the village did not believe a word that Moishe said was because even if he had said anything they have to experience the situation. Sighet was a peaceful and quiet town
and somebody saying something huge was non believable to the people in town. The sayings of Moishe were too horrible to say to be true out loud. If the people in the village were made aware of the injustice then the situation would become their responsibility to take action but since they were not ready it was easier for them to deny it and not do anything.
