Molar Mass Of Na2co3
In this practical the aim was to determine the concentration of Na2CO3 in a standard solution, by using Hydrochloric acid to neutralise it. This experiment involved using distilled water to dissolve the sodium carbonate until 250 ml of solution were made. I had to calculate, from the information provided, how much sodium carbonate to use in the making of the solution. Using the volume and concentration of the solution, I was able to calculate the moles of the solution (concentration x volume). Using the periodic table I was able to calculate the molar mass of sodium carbonate which was 106, from this I could calculate the mass of the sodium carbonate I needed to make the solution (moles x Mr).
After making the solution I cleaned the apparatus

The titration that took place was Acid and Alkali reaction as sodium carbonate in a solution becomes an alkali. Acids are substances that produce hydrogen ions in solution and bases are substances which produce hydroxide ions in solution. HCl is an acid because it produces H+ ions when in solution, for example, a neutralisation titration this also make it a proton donor. Na2CO3 is a base and an alkali as it is in solution and produce OH- ions due to the distilled water used to make it into a solution, it is also a proton acceptor.
When an acid and an alkali are reacted the form salt (NaCl). Sodium chloride is an ionic compound with a giant ionic lattice structure. The sodium ions and chloride ions alternate with each other in each of the three dimensions of the diagram

This can be determined by a titration. For example a standard titration process is used to determine the acidity of orange juice. An electrode is added to a solution of orange juice and distilled water in which the titrant catalyst measures the acidity of the juice. This technique can be used by manufactures to vary the quality to satisfy customer or to meet special dietary needs.
Wine
The flavour of wine can be effected by its acidity as it is a delicate balance. Because of this wine is also affected by age and is response may vary. Wine may be improved by measuring acidity using titration. The process is inexpensive for wine makers as titration kits are available for this purpose. The process can determine if additional ingredients are needed to maintain its quality.
Pharmacology
Developing medication is a precise science that requires specific measurements of chemical quantities. Titration is a very important process in the pharmaceutical industry that ensures quality control.
