Molly Craig is the main character in the film, Rabbit Proof Fence. Molly is introduced at the very start of the film and is the daughter of Maude, an Aboriginal woman. This story is shown in Molly’s perspective at the home; Jigalong and the Moore River Settlement where ‘half-castes children’, like Molly are forcibly taken from their homes. Molly is a ‘half-caste child’, meaning a child of mixed race. This film is trying to show the truth of the ‘half-castes children’ or also known to as the ‘Stolen Generation’ which occurred in the late 1800’s to 1970’s. This film shows the story of three ‘half-caste’ girls trying to achieve the impossible of escaping the Moore River Settlement and going home.
Molly is a fourteen year old girl and is portrayed as a young adult that is mature for her age. She has limited dialogue, therefore making her appearance more significant in the film. She belongs in an Aboriginal tribe along with her mother, Maude and friends, Daisy Craig Kadbill and Grace Fields. Molly is accepted in the tribe and is great tracker (a person who tracks someone or something by looking at their trail). Molly has two large, black to dark brown eyes that are constantly glazing at people. This allows the audience to know that she is a very observant character.
