Carol Berkin masterfully presents a glimpse of the lives of the women who were affected by the Revolutionary War through many different eyes, views, and opinions in Revolutionary Mothers: Women in the Struggle for Independence. She paints a vivid picture in your mind of how the war affected these women by not focusing on one race or political view, but rather through multiple races and political views.…
Malala Yousafzai, an advocate for education for women in underdeveloped countries, once said, “The extremists are afraid of books and pens, the power of education frightens them. They are afraid of women.” (Claire). In the past, women had always been seen as the “weaker class”. A notion was present that women did not have the intellectual ability to learn and process information. Overtime, society has begun to generally accept that women are able to perform the same tasks as men, but this idea of acceptance did not occur overnight. It took many years, and massive feminist movements to unite society and display the great value of women. During the time period of various minority rights movements in the 1800’s, in “Enlightened Motherhood”, Frances…
The relationship between an author and a reader is needed in all literature. In Motherhood: Who Needs it? the author makes a conscious effort to establish a positive relationship with the audience. The entire tone of the piece was informal which allows a reader to have a good response. When a persuasive piece is not in an informal tone it makes it harder to listen to and more difficult in which to connect. Rollins purposefully made it sound as if a friend was trying to convince you. Being persuaded by a friend is much easier than being persuaded by a stranger.…
The mom, if I were to pick my least favourite character in the book it would be the Mom. She’s imperious and upfront “ Mom was the enforcer, always hovering, but Dad hung back a little. He thought it was important that I make my own mistakes now and then. (77)”. Yeah, I admit she’s the rock of the family If you didn’t have her then you wouldn’t be able to be balanced, but it doesn't hurt to move a little, endeavor, contemplate the answer to the question that you alway had. The grandfather of the boy in the book tragically died and when he died his grandson was there as well. The boy says to everyone that he saw a peculiar figure that might have killed his grandfather. When he tells his mom that he wants to go on a quest to find this beast…
I’ve been told the impact of a parent’s passing can carry on for years or forever. I was my mother’s primary care giver for two years. In her last four months, along with hospice, I took care of her full time along with maintaining my full time job. She passed in her home surrounded by me and my other two siblings in January. Just three months later my dad, who was not married to my mom, died unexpectedly in his sleep. I am still in the tender times of grief from my mother’s and father’s deaths. Who would think I could fathom writing about such a sorrowful time in addition to writing about the lessons I learned from my mother’s last months and the graceful way she left this earth. I relive this not only because it is kind of…
A number of recent Hollywood movies depict family issues that are of interest to sociology researchers. These issues range from family relationships, sexuality, identity, socialization, all the way to parenthood and the diverse types of families that exist in society today. The family as an institution has changed and is continuously changing over the years. This institution serves as a source of reproduction, nurture, and socialization of its members in the society. Through this definition, the stereotypes of gender roles in the family have evolved, thus becoming a controversial topic within a number of studies and disciplines. The ways in which gender…

I want to start off by saying how excited I am to be joining A Place for Mom!! I started my career in health care nine years ago, originally working in nursing. I have worked in a variety of health care settings; Independent/Assisted Living, Memory Care, Long Term Care, Skilled Care, and the Hospital. I always knew I wanted to help people, seniors in particular. As a child I grew up living next door to my grandparents and did everything with them, this is where my love for seniors began. While working in the Hospital I came to the conclusion that nursing was not the way I was going to help people. I began working at an Assisted Living Community in Ames, Iowa as the Sales Director. I quickly learned that, that was how I was going to help people. For three years I got the pleasure of not only helping many families relieve their stress and fears for their loved ones care and safety, but I was also able to ensure their loved ones were able to live out their final years thriving. It was truly the most rewarding job, which brought me to A Place for Mom. At A Place for Mom I won't be limited to helping just the families that…
The Moms.com negotiation has two roles: Kim Taylor as the buyer for WCHI (Independent television station in Chicago) and Terry Schiller as a syndicated sales representative for Hollyville, Inc. an international multimedia corporation that specializes in producing television shows and motion pictures. On this negotiation I played the role of Kim Taylor.…
The comparisons--North vs. South, city vs. country, technology vs. nature--are numerous and have been well documented in 20th century literature. Progress contrasts sharply with rooted cultural beliefs and practices. Personalities and mentalities about life, power and change differ considerably between worlds... worlds that supposed-intellectuals from the West would classify as "modern" and "backwards," respectively. When these two worlds collide, the differences--and the danger--rise significantly. This discrepancy between the old and the new is one of the principal themes of Gloria Naylor's Mama Day. The interplay between George, Ophelia and Mama Day shows the discrepancies between a "modern" style of thinking and one born of spirituality and religious beliefs. Dr. Buzzard serves as a weak bridge between these two modes of thought. In Mama Day, the Westernized characters fail to grasp the power of the Willow Springs world until it is too late.…
A creation intended to bring joy and laughter to children across the world minions have turned into one of the greatest memes there is. Aside from being a meme minions have grown to be much more. They have become a fundamental element or building block of society or in other words have become a cultural trait. While cultural traits may assume many forms Minions can fall under any number of them. Taking over the image of many products during Universals advertising push Minions have become the faces of many products such as Twinkies and Amazon; brands that otherwise have no mascot. Amazon and Twinkies are not the only material artifact that Minions have become related to. The Mona Lisa has become closely associated with the Minions through the…
During the reign of Queen Victoria, a woman's place was in the home, as domesticity and motherhood were considered by society at large to be a sufficient emotional fulfilment for females. These constructs kept women far away from the public sphere in most ways, but during the 19th century charitable missions did begin to extend the female role of service, and Victorian feminism emerged as a potent political force.…
"The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin tells the story of a woman gaining independence after her husband’s death. The author uses feminist theory to display her beliefs and values. The relationship between Louise and Brently Mallard, Louise's reaction to the news of Brently's death, and her reaction to seeing him alive again are ways that Kate Chopin displays feminism.…
Through the years, I have learned many things; however, one thing that will always stick with me is to be humble and kind. I would gladly say that I learned this gesture on my own, but I would be lying if I did. My mom (Jill), my step dad (Mike), my dad (David), and my grandma/grandpa (Fern/Davey) have all taught me to be friendly. Although my family has taught me a lot about being sympathetic, a songwriter has also taught me this lesson in life: Tim McGraw. Always being humble and kind is a lot harder than you think; however, these wonderful people have taught me to be a caring person. Throughout the years, 17, these people have made a huge impact on who the real Hannah Nicole Harbaugh is.…
