Mona Lisa Deep within the safety of The Louvre many of the world’s most recognizable and influential pieces of art are safely kept for the eyes of the art loving public. One of the most mysterious paintings in the museum is a portrait of a beautiful renaissance era woman sitting in front of a landscape of hills and flowing water. She stands at almost three feet tall by two feet wide and her smile is recognized around the globe. The mystery behind her meaning, who she is, and the hidden messages that the portrait is said to contain have captivated people for centuries. She draws you in with a smile that makes you believe that she knows a secret that she will never tell. The subject sits in front of a background that looks to be a lush green valley with a lake that has a much higher water level on one side of her head than on the other. The background is sort of hazy, which was part of the renaissance style that da Vince himself created and others copied. It is said that at one time there were columns on either side of her and a short wall behind her suggesting that the painting that now sits in the Louvre is just a cutting on the original painting. Some theorists believe that the uneven water levels may be a prediction made by da Vinci himself about a great flood and the end of the world. Below the water is a jagged and rocky countryside with what appears to be a road running through it. The actual location of this background has never been officially located but many European countries have tried to claim it as their own. The most recent indication of the location of the background is in northern Italy. Around the time that this painting was created a great flood demolished a town in northern Italy. His works of art are some of the most well-known and inspiring to all who see them. Although he influenced kings and common men alike his life was much of a mystery. He was not only and artist he was also a philosopher, architect, and help to lay the foundation for the discovery of human anatomy. He invented the smoky style of painting that you see in the background of the Mona Lisa and many of his other works of art. The secrets of his life and the discoveries that he made are one of the many reasons that the painting is constantly scrutinized. In conclusion the Mona Lisa continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of millions of people not only with her beauty but also with mystery and intrigue that are a part of her story. With all of her mysteries and all of the theories aside it still stands that this is one of the greatest works of art that came from that
