Does Money Really Affect the American Dream? “In 1985, roughly 10 percent of all Americans had suffered an acute financial trauma”, according to Hendrick Smith from Who Stole the American Dream? (Smith). For different reasons, people do not have a substantial amount of money for everyday necessities. Money will affect people’s ability to achieve their American Dream through race, culture, and beliefs. Everyone has an American Dream, and money is the backbone to almost everything. In some way, people use money everyday to buy things, build things and sell things. Money also comes in a variety of forms, from currency, to credit cards and debit cards. People who have very little, may look at their American Dream as having a house, a good or guaranteed dinner every night, not to hear gunshots, having a job they love, etc. on the other hand, people who have it way better may look at their American Dream as having a bigger house, nicer car, bigger paycheck, more clothes, and a new phone for example. Peoples’ ideas of “wealthy” or “poop” are always going to vary. Rich and wealthy are all based on personal opinions. The average person does not desire to be rich, they just want enough money to live on, and maybe a little more for extras. For the average person, extras include vacations, newer cars, and newer phones. Another question to help answer the big question is, Do people need money to be happy in life?. Many people would say yes and argue that people can buy the things that make them happy. The other side might argue that the things that make people happiest cannot be bought. Such as love, family, and good health. If everyone can find what makes them happy in life, then that should help direct them to their American
