Money Is a Good Servant but a Bad Master
Money is a good servant but a bad master
« on: June 08, 2010, 07:36:03 PM »
In our everyday life, money seems to be a necessary element. Without money, we cannot do anything. The utility of money is enormous and powerful and the proverb is actually ``Money is a good friend but also is a bad master``. I will try to prove the truth of this proverb and its certainty.

Everyone has to work hard to earn for his living. Each one provides a service and gets a revenue in return. This is how it works in the society today. With his/her income, s/he pays his/her basic need such as the rent, the food, the transportation and the clothing. We need the money to survive and to sustain our everyday life. Without money, we have to spend our night time on the street, wear the second handed clothing, eat the food found in the gabbage bin and walk to the destination. We will become a beggar living on the street and have a miserable life. Therefore, each one has to work to earn the money to sustain their life.

Second, money can give a person the power of consummation. With the revenue, one can purchase a car for better convenience. S/he can go to fancy restaurant with his girlfriend. S/he can live in a bigger house for comfort. S/he can dress up in a beautiful suit for appearance. The person can improve his/her life by spending money he earns and has more diversity in his life. Money brings human being happiness, satisfies one's secondary needs and gives a person the power of consummation.

Third, money is a good solution for problems. When one encounters a problem, for example, s/he lost his power supply for his laptop. Then, s/he can go to the computer store and buy a new one. S/he can solve his problem by spending money in the fastest and most way instead of borrowing one from his friend or spending a whole day to find it. (To be continued)

Money is of major importance in today’s society. If you have an abundance of it, it could vault you into a life of friends, leisure, and fame. Contrarily, a lacking of it could leave you with absolutely nothing but shambles. Indeed, that is the point William Hazlitt attempts to make in “on the want of money.” By using appeal to prosperity, contrasting of ideas, and the idea of ethos, Hazlitt effectively persuades the reader that money is needed to achieve their desired goals.…

I disagree with Aristotle and this form of logic; therefore, money is vital for survival at the present time. Money is needed for food, housing, transportation, and these things are needed for survival. According to Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, there are five phases that you need to accomplish to become a self-actualized person. They are physiological needs, which are food and water, lodging and air. The second phase is security needs, and they need to feel safe and secure, which could be living in a good neighborhood. The third phase is social needs, which are love and belonging, for example family. The fourth phase is esteem needs, which are self-esteem and accomplishments. The last phase is self-actualizing needs, and few people reach this stage. Self-actualizing people are concerned with personal development, and not concerned with what others think, nevertheless fulfilling their full potential. An example is Abraham Lincoln and John F.…

Since the time when cavemen inhabited the earth, it has become human nature to want more than what one has. Before the concept of wealth was developed, humans fulfilled their needs by trading or bartering with others based on items that they needed to survive. As mankind has advanced, humans have expanded into desiring nonessential things. Money has become a medium for exchange and a payment for work, and currency is now fundamental to most life on earth. Only three percent of Americans supply their own food through farming or hunting, which reflects that a massive ninety-seven percent of American’s use money every day to purchase food.1 The amount of money one possesses culturally determines their success in life. Humans who have wealth, also have influence, because they have what people desire and are able to live the lifestyle that they want. As people believe that they need more wealth, they become slaves to money. The humans who possess wealth gain influence over money worshippers and as a result, are the most powerful in society.…

First, since no one knows what will happen in the next second, we had better enjoy what we own now. For example, imagine a person, who saves all he can save in the hope of living better in his later life or making use of money, when necessary, suddenly dies from a traffic accident one morning, leaving all his savings without enjoying a pit of them. Money is just what can provide us most of the enjoyments. In this highly commercial world, nothing can be done without money- seeing movies, watching a game or a concert, eating in a fancy restaurant. Money itself, indeed, cannot give us happiness, but at least it can offer us such opportunities to seek happiness in certain aspect.…

Marketers want us to believe that living a selfish life, involving nothing but the pursuit of money and fame will bring success and happiness. Sadly, this is not true. Money is comparable to the often-mentioned new toy—fun while it is brand new and fresh, but terribly boring and unexciting after a few hours of play. Although money can buy conveniences and comforts, one needs much more than superficial luxuries to live a successful, well-balanced life. Money does make life easier, but it does not necessarily make it better. For example, money can not make one knowledgeable or wise – that only comes with hard work and committed study. And money can not help one forge a long-term relationship with husband or wife – that only comes through love, commitment, and sacrifice. All the money in the world cannot teach respect or courtesy – that only comes with a good up-bringing and a strong concern for the feelings of others. Can money give one the gift of patience or leadership or appreciation or courage or friendship…
