Monkey King: Hero Is Back

Description: My subject on this piece of paper is the character design of the movie Monkey King: Hero is Back. On this horizontal composition’s artwork, the figure in the center of paper is the main character of this movie, the Monkey King. Monkey King is wearing the armor and holding his golden cudgel, and standing on a stone. He is a classic character in Chinese novel and cartoon, he include few generation’s memories. This movie considered many popular elements and use the latest technology. We can see it from the setting of character. Compare with the old Chinese 3D animation, this film’s director paid more attention to the details. The background is a bright spot too. Artists add the fog’s effect to create a space between the character and the background. The background’s setting showed the mountain and river of the ancient China. Sunset’s color matched the color of armor and cudgel perfectly.

Analysis:
It’s the power symbol of Monkey King. Artist created this character used many classic elements from ancient China to decorate the armor. For example, designer used the classic color of general’s matching color: red and gold to mould the armor of Monkey King. Because general give people a feeling of aggressive, winner, great-hearted etc. So these matching color make the hero’s feeling stronger. Although I’m not sure which technique did the artists use, but I think they probably used tree-dimensional to built the background. Making the view further back to the character, created the space between character and view. It makes the views more real. We can see many organic shapes behind the Monkey King. They combine and create the background. The cudgel is big and thick, but Monkey King seems hold it easily. It shows the strength of
