Mono Lake Committee
Nayeli Elizabeth Zamarripa

Mono Lake Committee Scholarship There’s no place like Mono Lake; words cannot describe how beautiful this place is. The atmosphere here makes you feel at peace with yourself. Not only do people from all over the world come here; photographers, journalists, ornithologists, but even locals come to connect with nature.
As I am meditating on the shore line of Mono Lake, I begin to take in my surroundings. The scenery is unique and brings me peace. It unifies me with who I am and who I will become. I feel the sun baking down on me as a breeze lifts the smell of salt water towards me. When that settles, I pick up a thick earthy smell that reminds me of wet grass. It’s easy to notice different types of birds flying around, for example, lake birds and shore birds, Canadian geese, California gulls, an osprey flying off the towering tufas. It’s amazing how the tufas are composed of the same substances and yet they each have their own complexity. I was fascinated by the seagulls’ nests tucked into the tufas. If this lake wasn’t here, there would be no place for the birds to rest and eat. Mono Lake isn’t just a lake, it’s a special lake. This lake is ever changing, there’s always something new. Everything around me is peaceful and yet buzzing with life.
Places like Mono Lake matter because it gives people the chance to connect with nature and in today’s overscheduled world it’s important to rest and reflect on life. In the city, there’s no woods for people especially kids, to explore and discover places like these. No matter how many times people drive past this magical place, it never gets old.

There I am sitting in my canoe, I close my eyes and just listen. I listen to the trees swaying in the breeze, the raindrops pitter-patting on my coat, the movement of the paddle as it dips into the water. I picture the beautiful autumn foliage that surrounds me as leaves gently fall from the tree onto the surface of the water and make a print on the water, even if it is only there for a second. As English writer William Hazlitt once said “We do not see nature with our eyes, but with our understandings and our hearts.” This is how I felt out on the river during our trip, I felt like I could really understand and appreciate the beauty and serene peace of being one with nature. I also felt like I could appreciate the care that it takes to keep…

The sciences have managed to encapsulate my intrigue throughout my life, an intrigue that has pushed me to seize many opportunities that enrich my knowledge towards the sciences. UW-Eau Claire offered a Domestic Intercultural Experience to Yosemite National Park in May of 2016 that I had the blessing of attending. A squadron of Eau Claire college students accompanied by two professors of the University flew to California for nine days to explore the natural geologic beauty of Yosemite National Park. We packed our experience with multiple hikes around the park as well as a few presentations and talks that discussed the history of the park and how it was formed. Being surrounded by massive walls of plutonic rock made me realize the awesome power of nature that comes in the form of glaciers. Mono Lake was also a part of the agenda on the immersion experience. At the lake, we learned that its salinity is caused by the lack of an outflow for the lake and we discovered the volcanic history of the Mono basin.…

Some people enjoy the beach, others enjoy the mountains, but my favorite place is Branson, Missouri. Imagine peering down from the dock into a body of water in which you can see every little detail as it descends toward the bottom. You look up and see the cascading Ozark Mountains as if they were part of the border of Mona Lisa’s frame. A hush and peace unlike any other overwhelms you. You can hear the calming sounds of nature as an underlying harmony to that peace. The birds croon soft tones as the water flows softly past the dock. As the morning begins, a cool breeze floats off of Table Rock Lake giving the sensation of Fall no matter what time of the year it may be. Your stomach begins to growl as the smell of fresh baked…

Silence is the sustenance of life. It is that luxurious space of textured absence that invariably connects all things. It is what philosopher William Penn calls “the true rest of the mind”, but from that “rest” has come some of the greatest universal truths and deepest wisdom ever known to man. The seers, the saints, the shamans and sages have all been sustained through nature’s silence; it’s presence being their greatest companion, their divine nourishment and perfect refreshment. In this essay, I will be reflecting on my own experience of going to nature and meditating in silence. For seven days I engaged in a practice of visiting one spot, letting go, and just being open to whatever transpired. It was an exercise I took on with a tenacious vigor, and although it was by no means “easy”, this experience taught me how to systematically divest from my immediate social reality, tune into the natural world, and just be present to the voice within. During this exercise, there were times when I felt I could remain silent and connected to nature forever; other times it took every bit of my energy to refrain from plugging in and joining the social world. All things considered, I walked away from each “nature pause” with a renewed sense of groundedness, clarity, connection, and insight.…

“Dude, whenever I stuck in a traffic jam in Dhaka I always close my eyes and I pretend that I am sitting beside a lovely river, watching scenic beauty of the surroundings and walking through the road of a beautiful place. It’s not just any place, it’s my hometown.”My hometown is full of natural scenic beauty. It is beside a river and covered with lovely mountains. We often go for swimming in the river and also go for fishing. We climb to the pick of the mountains over and over again just to see the unique beauty of my hometown. There is a forest behind my hometown. It’s so dense and dark that one cannot see sunlight if he/she enters into the forest. There are so many birds in the forest that we cannot count them in numbers. We always here birds chirping coming from the forest. I can say that my hometown always makes me nostalgic. So whenever I get free time I run there and feel the magnificence of…

Upon my arrival, the first thing that was noted was the vast amount of water surrounding the cliff. At first, the scent was a bit overwhelming, because it hits you all at once.…

Silence fell across the group as we trekked towards our final destinations in the woods. For most, it was wandering, hoping to come upon some spot which would inspire them, but not for me. As the leaves crunched beneath my feet, I had one spot in mind. Two springs ago, I had stumbled across it while following the stream that runs from the pond. Freshman year, Lucas Santiago and Ethan Clearfield found a small clearing by the stream, next to a miniature forest of bamboo. They built a makeshift bridge across the stream, and put a quaint little bench at the other side. I loved that spot, and would often go there just to think or get away. One day, instead of crossing the bridge, I followed the stream further away from school, and came across a mini “gorge.” It wasn’t really a gorge, but the stream had hollowed out the dirt around it, and now there are dirt walls on either side of it, about five feet high. I found it again today. Of course, the last time I found it, it was spring, so it was lush and green, and the water rushed through the not-gorge. Today, however, everything was unpleasantly gray after a long gray winter. I walked next to the water until I found myself at a spot where two trees had fallen across the not-gorge, and formed little bridges. I clambered my way up the dry dirt wall, across the fallen tree into the center, and got myself comfortable. I was in a good space to observe the whole gorge. Underneath me, water trickled steadily, and if I held perfectly still and stopped breathing, I could hear the faint babbling of the water beneath my dangling feet. With my hood up around my ears, I could hear the wind whistling through the trees, though thankfully I was protected from any harsh breezes by the gorge wall. Small clumps of dirt tumbled down the reddish-brown walls as squirrels chattered, clicked and squeaked from a tree on the bank. Around me, I could see the tops of the bare,…

The next day, we took a tour to around the island by boat. I could watch the light colored sail boats disappear in the distance; there was bluish pastel water in front of me that went on for miles and miles. Looking out, I saw dolphins and thought how their lives are so wonderful. There was grayish blue color shimmer in the orange yellow sky making me feel happy that I got to see them for a split moment. The sun was starting to go down giving the water an orange glowing look. The ocean had its own ways of making me feel calm and relaxed.…
