The reason as to why Korea was her inspiration for her poem is that, ever since end of World War Two, Korea has been divided into two separate countries, the two countries being North and South Korea of course. The poem, Monologue for an Onion, represents Korea in that both the onion and the person are split, yet somehow they are still connected to one another. What this means is that the onion is split because of its layers being peeled away from it, yet still remaining somewhat connected to its layers of flesh that lay upon the counter and the person that now carries its feelings, thoughts, and smells. The person, despite being split at their core or their heart, is connected to it because of the onion revealing what the person did not know of themselves. These two represent Korea in that the North and South countries would continue to always be connected to one another, despite the Soviet Union and the United States of America taking control of the two, respectively. The people of the two, some of the ideologies of the two, and the wars of the two would always keep the two connected no matter who or what attempted to split them apart, even if the who or the what were two powerful countries like the Soviet Union and the United States of America.
