ISAIAH: So, this is our IOP. We chose to study the topic of setting in the Great Gatsby. More specifically we chose to compare where we live, so our setting of the Salt Lake City, to the setting of the Great Gatsby. Along this we also chose to analyze and study the significance of the setting in the Great Gatsby.

The people who live here want to leave. For example George talks about wanting to save his money and move myrtle and himself out of the Ashheaps. And who wouldn’t want to leave with all of these poor conditions?, but no matter how hard these people want to leave it is hopeless. Another key part of the valley of ashes would be Dr. T. J Eckleburg. He can be found here on a billboard and it is important to note that he is seen as a symbol/god of death. He watches the people living here suffer and be consumed by materialism. The valley of ashes is a place that derives a great amount of wealth for the people living in the eggs. But for the people who live by this industrial hellhole there is no benefit. Having to live in these conditions cause people to feel unhappy and this causes the decrease in morality. (NEXT) Moral decay can be seen in utah too, in our very own valley of ashes. When we were driving around looking for the prime examples we saw a building labelled southern xposure. This is basically a strip club or show club, or whatever you want to call it, but is morally low when comparing it to many other places in our valley. Generally the valley of ashes is a terrible place to live and no one who lives there wants to be
