countries and keep our land to ourselves. We also need to keep our national borders where they are so other countries can’t migrate and start colonizing in our territory. One of the most important things we need to do is keep this country safe. Part of that is having a huge military in order to protect the public from enemies. This army has to have major power over other countries so that no foreign enemies will invade and start a war. On the other hand we also need to keep peace with these countries so none of these problems occur. We need to have interest in keeping peace with foreign countries as well as having power. These are things the United states needs to balance and have control over. As a secretary of state I have negotiated the Adams- Onis Treaty which gave the territory of Florida to the United States which resolved border issues from the Louisiana Purchases.
I have also negotiated a settlement with England to decide the border between the western Unites States and Canada. This is known as the Treaty of 1818. Another treaty I helped resolve was the Rush-Bagot Treaty of 1817. This is where the boundary between British North America and the United States along the 49th parallel where the Rocky Mountains were settled. This was caused by ignorance of actual geography in the boundary agreed to in the 1783 Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolutionary War. That earlier treaty had used the Mississippi River to determine the border, but assumed that the river extended further north than it did, and so that earlier settlement was unworkable. All of these treaties helped keep the peace between countries without war breaking out; it settled boundary disputes and helped the U.S. gain power in the world. All of these things are interests that the United States needs to keep during your term as the secretary of
state. Some things that you need to do in the future for foreign policy that I believe will help this country are keeping the peace with foreign countries such as Great Britain, France, and Latin America. And gain a national security in the United States by providing protect for the people, land, and resources. These goals are crucial to the foreign policy of our nation. If these are to fail to happen in the future we could be in jeopardy. Other nations might strive to take over our people or our land. All that we have worked for to be independent will disappear. The economic toll could be destroyed as well as the social and political. All of these things are very important to our country’s future which is why I am asking you to do this for the good of this country. If you follow the Monroe Doctrine as foreign policy and do these things that I ask of you, your term as secretary of state will be as good if not better than mine.
Sincerely,
John Quincy Adams
