Genetically modified crops, or GMOs, are crops that are cross breaded and technology added to perform better for growers and to fit consumer’s needs. Monsanto is the leading producer …show more content…
With these genes, farmers can limit the use of harmful pesticides and other spays. When farmers use fewer pesticides and sprays they will lower the pollution rate in soil and in the air (Barboza).
A lot of genetically modified crops have a drought tolerance in them. This gene is extremely useful when it is dry and hot. On the flip side of that, they have genes that can tolerate the moisture when it is high. It’s kind of like getting the flu shot, it’s not going to make it impossible for you to get the flu but it’s going to try fight it off (Barboza).
Another good example of a GMO is watermelon. Have wondered why some watermelons have seeds inside and some don’t? Well one day a farmer was probably trying to make his produce to is consumers’ needs and he crossed a bunch of different watermelon genes until he got a seedless watermelon (Gower).
Many dietitians are promoting GMOs to people because they are more nutritious for the human body. When people try to lose weight they can eat special GMO foods that have less calories and more nutrients to give the person energy to keep working out …show more content…
GM crops help livestock bulk up faster and more efficient. A lot of genetically modified crops are being used for animals as vitamins. These crops that are being used as vitamins can clean up a cough or a snotty nose. Many farmers and rancher take this route instead of using a syringe because it is a lot more gentle on the animal (Gower).
One major problem with the genetically modified crops (GMO) is that people are not informed the ingredients that the product may contain. In the United States there are no federal mandates that exist on labeling genetically modified foods or crops. Many states are considering making a law to force producers to label there product. Washington may be the first state to enforce a law (Plumer). The reason people want to know the ingredients is because they are afraid that there are toxic chemicals in the GMO they want to buy. Also, consumers that are allergic must be aware of what they are eating so they don’t have an allergic reaction
