Throughout the novel, Steve struggles with the thought of himself as a monster. Most people around him think he is guilty, he starts out in court admitting to what he does but nobody believes him. If he was to have killed the clerk he would have admitted it. Nobody wants to believe him just because he is black and he starts to think is he really a monster. “Maybe I could make my own movie.
