Dr. Montessori is recognized as the founder of Montessori Method and one of the pioneers in the development of early childhood education. She is also respected and reputed for promoting a substantial number of important educational reforms, which now have become integral components of 21st century's educational core. She is one of the most renowned women in the history of education of children. Her revolutionary and innovative findings and teachings have led to a startling change in the way and plan of educating children worldwide. Maria Montessori was born to Alessandro and Renilde Montessori at Chiravalle, Italy on 31st August, 1870. Her father was a military man, conservative in outlook and thinking. His frequent transfers from place to place gave Maria the opportunity to be educated in big cities of Italy. Her mother hailed from an academic family. She was highly educated and liberal in her ideas. She was quite supportive of Maria’s academic career.
At the age of 12 her family moved to Rome to give her better educational opportunities. Her parents suggested Maria Montessori a teaching career, like for many women of her time, which she refused and chose engineering to pursue her love of mathematics. To be able to study this she had to study in a school for boys. Maria Montessori later decided to change her career and switched to medicine. A woman studying medicine was unheard of in her time and thus she was first rejected by the board of education to study medicine but eventually triumphed. Montessori pursued medical and scientific education. Despite many years of opposition from her father, teachers, and male fellow students, she graduated with highest honors from the Medical School of the University of Rome, becoming the first woman physician in Italy in 1896. Thus, Montessori holds the title of being the first lady doctor in the history of Italy.
