Montresor was completely determined to get revenge on Fortunato. Montresor went down into the catacombs and placed everything needed to chain up Fortunato and hang him up in his enteral grave. He makes sure Fortunato is not expected at home or anywhere else on the night of his plan, Montresor had to be patient throughout this. Montresor says, “My friend, no; I will not impose on your good nature.” By pretending to be Fortunato’s friend throughout the years helped lead to Fortunato believing and going along with Montresor, also this helped once Fortunato goes missing no one will expect Montresor because of their “close friendship” throughout the long years.
Last Montresor was completely heartless. He didn’t change his mind once when he heard the begging of Fortunato to let him go. There was a brief hesitation but with all the evil lurking in his heart it wouldn’t change his actions. Montresor says, “A wrong is undressed when retribution overtakes its redresser.” This quote means that Montresor was determined to correct the wrong that Fortunato had did to him and what the never ending cycle of betrayal can turn into until the situation is resolved or one of them is dead .Who knew a little insult could make someone as heartless to kill.
In all Montresor had many characteristics, yet three certain ones stood out. He had a determination to get revenge, cleverness in doing so, and last a completely frozen heart, better known as heartless.
