In turn, all of these adolescents who experience any type of depression or other mood disorder are more likely to turn to drugs, alcohol abuse, and end up with eating disorders. Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia have unfortunately become a trend in today 's adolescent society due to mood disorders. Anorexia is a common eating disorder that involves rapid weight loss due to lack of eating food, or starvation, because of their dissatisfaction of their self image. It is a disorder that is most common amongst young women and teens. Bulimia is also a common eating disorder that involves binge eating and purging. Both disorders are serious and can be life threatening, if not controlled. Both disorders are due to unhappiness about one 's body image. Media including Internet, magazines, and movies play a big role on the adolescents view of self image along with peer pressures.
Bipolar disorder or manic depressive illness is another mood disorder that is common in young adolescents. It can begin during childhood and early adolescence, but is normally not diagnosed until adulthood. People who have bipolar illness have episodes or changes of mood from manic highs to extreme depression.
