Mood Food
Just the thought of food makes people happy. This is not so uncommon, since we depend on food for many reasons other than hunger. When we feel lonely and sad some people indulge in eating. Also when we are happy we celebrate by treating ourselves to a favourite meal or snack. Food is responsible for the production of mood enhancing chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters that are most sensitive to diet and influential in affecting mood are serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Norepinephrine and dopamine are alertness chemicals. This chemical makes us think and react more quickly, feel motivated and makes us more mentally energetic. Serotonin is a calming and relaxing chemical. When this is produced in the brain, feelings of stress and tension decrease as we feel sleepy and our reaction time becomes slower.
Protein rich food increases the production of the alertness chemical. Fish, shellfish, lean beef, cheese dried peas and beans are good examples of protein packed foods. Eating carbohydrates without protein has a calming effect. How calming depends on the type of carbohydrates that are taken in. Brown rice, buckwheat, whole-grain rye bread, sourdough rye bread, pita bread, sweet potato, most wheat pastas promote more focused and calming aspect of serotonin and we would feel less sleepy and sluggish. But on the other hand Sugar, white bread, rice cakes, wheat crackers, bagel, instant rice, baked potato, rice and pasta produces more serotonin which makes us feel more sleepy and sluggish.
Food can greatly impact our mood. Sadness, anxiety, laziness, crankiness and even anger can be uplifted if we take the right food. Omega-3 fatty acids can treat depression and give a sense of happiness, eating a piece of dark chocolate can get rid of stress and having a cup of green tea could calm us down when we get angry.
