The Great “Moon Hoax”
Conspiracy theories based on the United States landing on the moon claim that the elements of the Apollo program and the associated Moon landing was a hoax staged by NASA and participating members of other organizations. Such conspiracy claims have been made by various groups and individuals since the mid 1970s. The most notable claim is that the twelve Apollo astronauts did not walk on the Moon. Conspiracists have based their theories on the notion that NASA and other participants blatantly lied to the public leading them to believe the landings happened by creating, destroying, or tampering with evidence. This evidence includes photos, videos, rock samples, and various other elements.
The main motive to fake the moon landing was to beat out the Russians in advancement of the space program. During this time period, the relationship between Russia and the United States was very tense due to the Cold War. Each country had been competing in the “Space race” and neither side wanted to be beaten by the other – having their countries reputation and self-confidence was at stake. The Russians developed their space program efficiently, and were swift to leave the Americans in their wake. America’s worst nightmare occurred when Russia won the space race having Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut, be the first man in space. The next challenge was to successfully land a man on the moon. President John F. Kennedy made a speech promising America that “We will achieve the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth." NASA felt immense pressure by John F. Kennedy’s proposition and they were given the impression that they had to achieve this goal by whichever means necessary. Was the only way to achieve this goal to stage the landing on a movie set? Many critics and experts believe this.
