Moon Monologue
I’ve been walking down this dirt path for hours, and the only thing running through my mind is how ready for a rest I am. The sun is especially radiant right now, seeing as it’s almost sunset. I see her deep, bright eyes twinkling like stars far in space, much like her mother’s. Then the screaming. What a horrible sound. Crying, screaming, her mother calling my name; the …show more content…
I smoothly replied, “I’d give a fortune to live where I could see me a sun do that every evening.” She watches me for a long moment, then says passively, “Does it every evening.” She sits down in her chair again, and I can feel my body relax a little more. I haven’t lost them yet. I carry on a conversation with the woman for a few more moments, laying on as much sugar and charm I can muster. She asked me my name and where I was from, but of course I couldn’t give a real answer. With the accident and the police after me, the man who shared a lovely daughter with a gorgeous wife was long gone, just like they were. I turn to her mother, named Lucynell as well, and simply inquire, “Pardon?” With lidded, unblinking eyes she repeats, “I told you, you could hang around and work for food, if you don’t mind sleeping in that car yonder.” I’m first overjoyed and ecstatic from hearing these words, but then encompassed with a heavy feeling of guilt. Everything was going according to plan, but that meant nothing good for them. I shook the thought

The story, written in the form of a letter, shows the process of a thirteen-year-old girl becoming more mature as she expresses her grievances from her tragic childhood. At the beginning of the story, she described both the emotional and physical difficulties her family suffered through because of the absence of her father. She felt lonely, insecure and confused as she hoped that her father would come back. “Sometimes I had bad dreams. I would dream the welfare took us away and no one missed us, not even mommy. Daddy where were you?” (Page 163) At the end of the letter, however, the girl started to understand that her view of the world before was unbalanced and incomplete, “through a thin veil full of small holes”. (Page 165) She felt more released and started to notice “the greatness of the world”. (Page 165) She began to treasure all the memories she had with her family instead of thinking about her misery all the time, “we carried on living.” (Page 165) There was a great transition of her character from the beginning to the end of the letter.…
