Although the reader rejoices with every victory, they also live in trembling fear and agonizing pain. Being punched in the face 220 times is something the audience will not forget. “The first few punches, Louie stayed on his feet. But his legs soon began to waver….he blacked out...” (Hillenbrand 295). All throughout Unbroken, the reader feels as though they are there, experiencing Louie’s pain and suffering. The Diary of Anne Frank is an exemplary parallel to Hillenbrand’s Unbroken: the audience connects with the characters on a deeper level, almost as if they are in the story themselves. Just as the reader begins to lose hope for Louie’s restitution, he grants the glory of ending his internal war. “At that moment, something shifted sweetly inside him. It was forgiveness, beautiful, effortless, and complete” (Hillenbrand 386). Relief engulfs the reader as Louie escapes the grasp of excessive drinking, “The Bird,” and any haunting…

The short stories “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst and “My Brother’s Keeper” by Jay Bennet are both realistic examples of family dynamics and how they can affect the way siblings treat each other. “The Scarlet Ibis” demonstrates how older siblings tend to feel the need to assist or help their younger siblings in things they cannot do, often leaving the younger siblings codependent on the older siblings for everything. In comparison, “My Brother’s Keeper” demonstrates how trauma can lead to siblings leaching to each other and becoming reliant, more often one more than the other. Even when two people are not siblings but are close, one person can become codependent on the other, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is the prime example of this.…

As the story begins the reader quickly learns that Sister, the main character and narrator, has a younger sister, younger by exactly one year to the day. This immediately suggests rivalry of sorts between the sisters. As Sister talks about her younger sister, Stella-Rondo, it is immediately clear to the reader that Sister is resentful towards Stella-Rondo and has been since they were children. “She’s always had anything in the world she’s wanted and than she’d throw it away” sister says of Stella-Rondo.(Welty 593-597). The reader also learns that sister has been living at home with her family “getting along just fine” since Stella-Rondo got married and moved to Illinois with Mr. Whitaker, who Sister dated first.(Welty 593-597). Stella-Rondo has now just returned home upon being separated from her husband.…

The character in this story, Sister, seems to be in a way jealous and a little selfish, but with good reason, she has a sister, Stella-rondo, who has always been everyone's favorite and everyone would believe everything she said, from her saying that Sister was "one-sided to her,( Stella-Rondos ) "adopted" child. Sister has every reason to not like Stella-Rondo. Everyone else in the house seems to think that Sister is indeed very jealous of Stella-Rondo, and Sister can not even defend herself because that would have just verified everyone's point. Although it is a little comedic, the whole story shows bits and pieces of anyone's everyday lives. Jealousy, stubbornness, spitefulness, and sibling rivalry are the main things implicated in this story.…

For example, My Sister’s Keeper, is one of the perfect examples of what saviour siblings in real life might go through. Anna’s parents only had her fabricated in a lab just to save her sister, Kate. When Anna was supposed to be a child, she never had the freedom. In the book, she writes, “My parents tried to make things normal, but that’s a relative term. The truth is, I was never really a kid…Nearly every time Kate’s hospitalized, I wind up there too,” (Picoult 10). Whether or not the parents of a saviour sibling had other intentions, the newborn baby’s first reason to be born into the world is to sacrifice and save the ill sibling. Anna’s actions were extreme; however, it is certainly worth the careful consideration of what may arise in the world. As a minor, most of the choices are made by parents. Being forced to be a donor without even realizing what it means strips away the savior child’s autonomy. When a child is old enough to realize what is being done to him, he is able to deny organ donations. However, in most cases, even when the person no longer wishes to be a donor, he continues to do so out of guilt (Carmo). These internal battles that the savior siblings have to fight can result in serious psychological…
