Mormons believe that the only way into heaven is to be baptized and that proxy baptism is the deceased’s chance to move on into heaven. The process involves Church members submitting the names of ancestors and someone being baptized in the place of the deceased inside a Mormon Temple (Mormonism 101: What is Mormonism). The deceased’s spirit can accept or reject said baptism, but will not be added to the Church’s list of members (Mormonism 101: What is Mormonism).
Mormons also abstain from alcohol, coffee, tobacco, unnatural teas, and illegal narcotics (Mormonism 101: What is Mormonism). The members of the Church who have followed the health code have been shown to have some of the lowest mortality rates of cancer and heart disease (Mormonism 101: What is Mormonism). As days passed, Nephi’s brothers’ wives began to act immorally and Nephi feared God would punish them and tried to chastise his older brothers (1 Nephi 18). They responded by tying him up so that he could not do his duties (1 Nephi 18). God responded to the family’s actions by sending a storm (1 Nephi 18-19). The storm was finally calmed when Nephi was released from his constraints and prayed to God (1 Nephi 18-19). The story is written in first person which is different from the bible and Torah which are written almost exclusively in the third person. The sea symbolizes life and that one day it can be calm and easy, but on another day it can be rough; it is supposed to teach that you should rely upon the Lord for help in those times. This story sounds much like the stories of Jonah and the Whale, the Old Testament or Torah, and of Jesus calming the seas, New Testament. In Jonah’s story, God was angry with Jonah trying to run from his duties and sent a storm to destroy the ship he was on. The storm only calmed until Jonah volunteered to be thrown off the ship to appeases God. In Jesus’s story, Jesus is on a ship with his disciples, when he goes to sleep, a great storm comes and frightens the disciples so much they wake Jesus and ask him what to do. Jesus upbraids his followers for their lack of faith and calms the sea. All three stories show a common theme
