According to Volkow & McLellan (2016), addiction develops slowly and only if one takes the drug for a long time. In the case of Jack, he is young and would recuperate fast. Moreover, children are very resilient and heal quicker. Thus, Jack would probably take morphine for a short time only as needed for the pain.
b) How would you explain physical dependence on opioids?
Physical dependence is when one takes the drug to prevent withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, muscle tremors (Volkow & McLellan 2016). The withdrawal symptom can also happen if one stops taking the medication abruptly.
c) How is abstinence syndrome prevented when patients are physically dependent on opioids? I have seen new born babies that get methadone to treat withdrawal symptoms. These babies are born physically dependent on opioids or another type of drugs because the mother is a user. Once the baby is born, he/she is not getting the drug. Consequently, withdrawal symptoms occur such as irritation, high-pitched cry, or tremors. The treatments to prevent withdrawal symptoms in the newborn babies are methadone or sometimes morphine, but the prescribed drug is tapered down until the baby does not need it
