Character Essay After reading the story “Mother and Daughter” I have noticed some character traits about the main character Yollie. Yollie is a very interesting character. Her personality in the book makes the book just that much better. In relation, three characteristics that Yollie demonstrates in this story very well is that she is very intelligent, humorous and appreciative. In this story, one of the first characteristics that Yollie demonstrates is intelligence. Intelligence means to have lots of knowledge and that you are clever. Firstly, Yollie demonstrates her intelligence by constantly studying. Yollie’s mother is always encouraging her to study because she has the capability of becoming a doctor. Next, Yollie also demonstrates her intelligence by being captain of the crossing guards and is an altar girl. Yollie’s intelligence has led her to this high achievements and honours. Also, Yollie is a whiz in her school’s monthly spelling bee. These are three examples that demonstrate Yollie’s intelligence.
Humorous means to cause lighthearted laughter and amusement. The first way Yollie demonstrates humour is when Ernie calls her to ask her to the movies, she just covers the phone for ten seconds and without actually asking her mom she just says that her mom says “Yes”. Another example is when her mom doesn’t wake her up after she told her to; she plays a prank back on her by putting a glass of water by her alarm clock. When her mother waked she overturned the glass of water and screamed. Next, Yollie is humorous when she burns her mom’s morning toast and gloats, “Ha Ha! I got you back “.
