Mothers: A Fictional Narrative
“I know she put pressure on you to do that; she told me the whole story. I know you were just trying to respect her. But you have to believe me when I say you have to listen to me in situations like that. Your mom … she just …” he paused trying to express his thoughts.
“Before your mom got sick, she was so … full of life. So independent. So energetic. It’s really, really hard for her to accept how she is now, because that is not really her. She still feels the same on the inside, but her outside won’t cooperate. So, sometimes she wants to buck the system. She wants to pretend she can, when she can’t. It’s up to us to help her during those times. To help her see that we still see the old her, but at the same time protect her when she needs it. Do you understand?”
Kelly nodded and looked down at her hands. She paused a moment before she spoke. “Dad?”
“Yeah, Baby?”
“Tell me more about her … before. I don’t remember. Every now and then I get these brief flashes in my mind. I think I remember what it was like, but then I wonder if maybe it’s not really a memory—maybe I am just making up a happy thought from things I have seen on TV or at my friends’ houses. Maybe I am imagining what I wish was real.”

“Your mother,” he began, “was the Belle of the Ball. She was beautiful. I fell in love with her when I saw her as the captain of the cheerleading squad. She loved her friends so much. We used to host great parties. She was a friend to everyone. It didn’t matter who they were or what their background was. She just loved people with this special energy that lifted people up.” He paused as if he were suddenly reliving former days, ordinary at the time, but now considered quite

CHAPTER FIVE Scrumptious Gnome Pie I awoke from my dream to discover that the little gnome I’d met in the Enchanted Forest was standing over me, tapping lightly on my chest. I was shaking and could still hear the sweet sound of the sirens voices tingling in my ears. “Cotton, you scared me!”…

My father had disappeared before my birth, and my mother never mentioned a single thing about him. Whenever she mentioned him, she did so out of spite and resentment. My mother and I lived happily together, singing and laughing at the things Grover’s Corners had for us. As I grew up, however, my mother changed from the sweet, kind person I had known to a cynical old woman who smoked cigarettes constantly. The mother I used to sing church hymns with had long disappeared, replaced by a vicious woman who considered her son as nothing more than a hindrance.…

About noon, on the fifth day of their journey, Charity told Uriah to stop the wagon. Looking around, Uriah did not see anything in particular that caught his attention and did not know why she wanted him to stop; as far as he could tell, there was not anything they needed there. And, his mother had not gotten off the wagon to go do her business or said anything about eating lunch. So, after bringing the horses and wagon to a complete halt, he turned to Charity and asked, “Why did you want me to stop?”…

The relationships displayed between mother and child in the stories, “A New Perspective” and “All the Years of Her Life” are closely similar and vastly different at the same time. The similarity is that the children in both of the stories have feelings of heartbreak and pity towards their mothers at the end of each of the stories, and the relationships they share with their mothers are problematic to say the least.…

I want to start off by saying how excited I am to be joining A Place for Mom!! I started my career in health care nine years ago, originally working in nursing. I have worked in a variety of health care settings; Independent/Assisted Living, Memory Care, Long Term Care, Skilled Care, and the Hospital. I always knew I wanted to help people, seniors in particular. As a child I grew up living next door to my grandparents and did everything with them, this is where my love for seniors began. While working in the Hospital I came to the conclusion that nursing was not the way I was going to help people. I began working at an Assisted Living Community in Ames, Iowa as the Sales Director. I quickly learned that, that was how I was going to help people. For three years I got the pleasure of not only helping many families relieve their stress and fears for their loved ones care and safety, but I was also able to ensure their loved ones were able to live out their final years thriving. It was truly the most rewarding job, which brought me to A Place for Mom. At A Place for Mom I won't be limited to helping just the families that…

I looked down at the picture I held in my hands of a child and her grandmother. The grandmother looked very weak and bony, the deep lines on her face cried exhaustion and pain; while the child was on the complete opposite end of the spectrum: vibrant, alive, and healthy. However, the woman did not cease to express her joy, through her worn out face ran a beautifully kind smile. Her smile told a story, she says, “Become the woman I could never be and become the woman you want, but never forget where you come from. Don’t ever forget your family.” Of course I could never forget my grandmother.…
