The Mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to stop drink driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking.
MADD is funded by the federal government as well as donations and sponsorships.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving was established to put a stop to drunk driving and underage drinking. A woman named Candace Lightner had a 13 year old daughter who was killed by a drunk driver. In response to this incident, on September 5, 1980 she decided to start a group called Mothers Against Drunk Driving which helped increase the awareness of drunk driving and underage drinking. Since MADD was established, the rate of drunk driving has dropped significantly and has become a large organization since it was started. MADD began as a small interest group that was focused on stopping drunk driving everywhere. The group grew much faster than Candace had expected. Within a few years, it caught the attention of the US Congress and soon became a national organization. In 2002, MADD came out with something called the “Eight Point Plan” which showed the goals that they had. MADD is now a very large group that is big on raising money and educating people about the dangers of drinking and driving. This organization became so large nationwide that soon the US Congress decided to raise the drinking age to 21 and began to enforce the drinking and driving laws much more than before. In 1988, a terrible accident occurred and 27 people were killed. Though this incident is very sad, it is also in a way good. It helped MADD grow even more and soon Canada adopted its own MADD organization. MADD hopes to soon eliminate drunk driving completely. Candace Lightner‘s goal for MADD was to put an end to drunk driving but soon there was a different goal for the group. Throughout the years, it has become an organization that went against alcohol completely.
