Change in the Environment It’s amazing to see how the environment has changed over time. Ecocriticism is a study of literature and the environment from an interdisciplinary point of view, where literature scholars analyze texts that illustrate environmental concerns and examine the various ways literature treats the subject of nature. Ecocriticism is important because it is showing people the relationship between literature and nature and how the behaviors of people effect the environment. Authors write with negative points, positive points, and fiction stories to influence their readers and persuade them to change their behavior towards the environment. Authors are writing stories and books, using negative points that try to change peoples behaviors about hurting the environment. In The Silent Spring, Rachel Carson (1962) uses an example from paragraph three that states, “Then a strange blight crept over the area and everything began to change.” This example is used to show that changes are being made to the earth by a strange change of disaster. In Moths of the Limberlost, Gene Stratton Porter (1912) states, “It was a piece of forethought to work unceasingly at that time, for soon commerce attacked the swamp and began its usual process of devastation.” This shows that such a beautiful sight was attacked by disasters of nature. Another example Gene used was, “Now, the Limberlost exists only in ragged spots and patches, but so rich was it in the beginning that there is yet a wealth of work for a lifetime remaining to me in these, and river thickets.” (Porter,1912) Gene put this into her piece to show that the Swamp was something very great!
