Motivation and Eating Healthy

Psychologists describe motivation or goals as cognitive representations of a desirable outcome that move a person into action. Dieting, eating healthy, exercising, and achieving good looks and health are all related to the goal of weight-control. A person who is motivated by food is also motivated to by other related goals, such as eating at a restaurant, opening the refrigerator, and opening a bag of chips. In order to maintain a healthy weight, people will set a conscious goal to eat healthy by dieting, exercising, or even undergoing a weight loss surgical procedure. To understand how individuals successfully maintain a healthy weight, one needs to understand the brain’s functions, emotions, and heredity associated with dieting (Stroebe, Van Koningsbruggen, Papies, & Aarts, 2013).

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) offers a noninvasive tool to examine the etiology of eating behavior, the variances in activation of brain regions in different states of hunger. Food intake regulation such as mediating hunger, judgments regarding food choice, the sensory and emotional pleasure associated with eating, and the control of energy metabolism is regulated by a variety of roles in the brain (Ho, Kennedy, & Dimitropoulos, 2012). Brain circuits such as the orbitofrontal cortex, insula, amygdalae, hypothalamus, striatum, and midbrain regions including the ventral tegmental area and substantia nigra are triggered when food and food-related visual cues are presented. When presented with food related stimuli, the orbitofrontal cortex and the amygdalae encode information linked to the reward value of food, while the insula processes information related to the taste of food. The nucleus accumbens and striatum regulate the motivational and incentive. Also, the nucleus accumbens and striatum regulate the motivational and incentive characteristics of food. They play an important role in the rewarding effect of food stimuli by

    There are many factors and attitudes, which can have a major influence over an individual's eating behaviour, such as mood, cultural factors or even their parents. Mood can have a major influence over an individual’s eating behaviour. It has been suggested that someone who over eats or under eats, may be suffering from Depression, and they use their eating behaviour as a way of masking their negative mood. It has also been shown that being in a low mood state can result in the desire to eat sweet or starchy foods. This is said to be because carbohydrates help the manufacture of serotonin (neurotransmitter associated with mood). Consuming high carb foods can also be used as a way of self-medicating an individual’s low mood. Verplanken et al (2005) conducted a correlational analysis on mood, impulse buying and the consumption of snacks. In this study, it was found that those with low self-esteem were more likely to impulse buy and consume snacks. It could be said that this is their way of coping with the emotional distress caused by low-self esteem. Therefore supporting the idea that an individual's mood can influence their eating behaviour. However, as this was a correlational study, cause and effect can not be established. It may be that impulse buying causes a lowered mood.…

    Yes, I believe my personal experiences support these concepts discussed in 12.3 of the reading material. The Learned Taste Preference and Aversion section describes that nutrition has little direct effect on our feelings of hunger. Many of us prefer to eat food that are culturally specific to us. This is something I agree with. For example I am half Mexican I enjoy spicy foods but my boyfriend and his children are not use to this type of food, while I think it’s good they do not like the taste because they have had different foods based on their culture. This does influence what we eat. Now on to when we eat, I do believe when we eat has to do with “cultural norms, work schedules, family routines, personal preferences, wealth, and a variety of other factors.” ( Biopsychology, John P.J. Pinel) The chapter also states on how we have certain feelings or attacks of malaise, as the reading calls it, when we miss a regularly scheduled meal. This happens to me, I feel nausea. Last factors that influence how much we eat. The reading material states that when we stop eating a meal before the food is gone is called satiety. “Satiety mechanism plays a major role in determining how much we eat.” (Biopsychology, John P.J.Pinel)This section also states that the way we feel about food and our personal experiences with food also influences how much we eat (not just our physical need for food but our physiological need for food affects how much we eat.) Also our social settings has an effect on how much we eat. I know this to be true because I am about 20lbs overweight and in social setting I eat less. I do not want others to think I eat too much.     I basically agree with what Wansink has to say about why people sometimes overeat unknowingly. This book itself is called Mindless Eating simply because sometimes we are unaware of what actually prompt us to eat what we eat and at what quantities. What is good about this book is that it does not sell unrealistic approach on how to lose weight, but instead shows us that it is the power of human brain which ultimately leads us to eat more or less. All those carbs, fat grams, and calories come behind. There are a lot of new discoveries- which I honestly never though about- that this book brings to surface. Having an open candy dish in your home or office makes it more likely that you will snack on whatever you put in there even when you are not hungry is one. Another is that foods with descriptive names will seem to taste better than those with less attractive labels although they are made of the same ingredients. Moreover, Wansink approach to the readers is not preachy at all, but full of eye-opening information which is really interesting in many ways. The book offers plenty of interesting studies, and one of my personal favorite is the study of strawberry yogurt, in which Wansink and his team invite 32 people to rate the taste of some new strawberry yogurts. The only exception is that they have to eat with the lights turned off; and that they have no clue that the researchers actually gave them chocolate yogurt instead of strawberry. Strangely, the mere suggestions that they were eating strawberry yogurt led 19 out of 32 people to rate it as having good strawberry taste. This simply concludes that we taste what we think we will taste; so if we can’t see the food and someone tells us we’re going to taste strawberry, strawberry it will be. Another thing I like about this book is that each chapter has its own “reengineering strategy” section; a part where Wansink gives us tips to make a change to our surrounding that can tempt us to overeat.
