The motorcycle Diaries
"The Motorcycle Dairies" is a biographical film that tells the tale of a formative journey by motorcycle across South America by Ernestro "Fueser" Guevara. The film depicts the gradual development of Fuser's physical journey which plays a major role in the awakening of his political consciousness and the shaping of his beliefs. As Fueser continues his physical journey, issues of oppression and injustice are raised and are used to facilitate the self-realization of the traveller. Director Walter Salles is able to vividly reproduce a continent beleaguered by poverty and disease through the use of motion picture techniques such as black and white film which preserves the film's authenticity and ambient music which supports the seamless and realistic look of the film.

During the 1950's Ernesto Guevara, a medical student, and his biochemist friend Alberto Grandado embark on a thrilling motorcycle trip through the coastal countries of South America. One of the opening scenes begins with a point of view shot of a long forever ending road. The camera moves adjacent to the bike giving the realistic effect of the bike moving fast along the empty roads, gaining a sense of freedom and enjoyment for the pair.

In the course of their travel, Ernesto and Alberto discover the reality of their country filled with suffering, injustice and oppression affecting the lower classes of the social hierarchy. The journey allows the two protagonists to face self-discovery and come to terms with the class distinctions which are prevalent in the Latin-American society. Salles explores the concept of self-discoveryThe time spent at San Pablo, a leper colony in Peru served the purpose of further developing the self-discovery within the characters.     The picture is of two friends, Cory and Joseph from San Antonio, Texas, who Alec Soth describes as riders, which is a reference to the bull riders. Bull riding is a famous hobby or even a profession in the South, in which one can jump on top of bull and compete to see how long they can stay on without falling down. With this picture taken as recently as last year, the picture gives the viewer a good understanding of modern day riders. These riders are wearing cowboy hats with both their hands rested in their pockets. Both men also have beards to go along with the more rural look that they are trying to show, but the beard are trimmed and taken care of giving the viewer a sense of modernism. The picture is mostly symmetrical in terms of objects, but the color are clearly a contrast of each other. The rider on the right is wearing all plain black, while the rider on the left has a checkered lighter color shirt on. The contrast of the colors along with the dressing style portrays the realism of this photo because of how men in Texas like to dress. Lastly, the picture is taken against a wall that is mostly plain with a design of holes going up and down in a straight line. With the calm and very loose form of the two riders, the photography gives a very simplistic feeling that is common in Texas, which is often the real the outlook of many who still enjoy bull riding.…

    Throughout the interactive oral, my understanding of cultural and contextual elements in Crossing the Mangrove was enhanced. Conde’s novel was abundant with culture due to her setting. Her choice of Guadeloupe as location and 1986 as the time period allowed for a mixture of traditional and modern views and ways of life. As Guadeloupe was a small island, it allowed for isolation and wonder. Many of the inhabitants of Riviere au Sel had left the island at least once, but were still isolated and found other lands to be obscure. The isolation also led to a unique type of class system based on race, education, or wealth. The influence of French colonization that had taken place was still evident in the community so lighter skin was envied in the town even though the inhabitants were generally all black.These people were respected due to skin color. Many of the inhabitants wanted a modernized way of life and in some aspects their culture related to ours. Although it may seem like Guadeloupe in 1986 was a completely different world from the one we live in, they have many of the same struggles our community has. Respected members of the community always create scandals with every misstep. Families seem perfect on the inside but are all experiencing their own peculiar problems.
