Will Cross is the first person to ever summit Mount Everest with type one diabetes. He also has completed the 7 summits. Cross, though he was also the first American with to summit with T1D, grew up in England. Possibly, one of the ways how Cross was able to be in shape for the climb was because he used to be a swimmer. Cross was determined, and in May, 2006, Cross had reached his greatest achievement, and reached the top of the world. Not only that, but he had made history. Though this was a great challenge to summit with T1D, Cross wasn’t the only one to summit. Another man, named Sebastien Sasseville, also summited, and has T1D.
Sebastion is a 33 year old man who summited in May, 2008. Seb, even though he got diagnosed in the year of 2002, did not stop to achieve his greatest dream. He grew up in Canada, and when he summited, became the first Canadian T1D to summit. Though Seb. got diagnosed later than Cross, that did not make the challenge any easier for him. Sebastian's focus was to try …show more content…
to keep his BG levels at around 150-200. Even though he was only the second T1D, that didn’t make this feat any less overwhelming.
People might wonder what the heck is insulin.
Insulin is a liquid that keeps the BG from going too high. People might also think that insulin would freeze, and it would. But the solution to this is to wrap the insulin in an insulator wrap to keep from freezing. Much like Sebastion, Cross tried to keep his BG around 150-200. This may not be an easy task, because the more the activity you do, the lower the BG goes. This means that you are losing energy, which means that you need to eat. So, if you are climbing Everest, I think that you would need loads of energy to do so. That being said, Cross and Seb. would have to pack possibly even more food, which will increase that weight, and that would mean that it would be even harder to
climb!
Diabetes is a very hard thing to conquer, believe me, I know. But these two men were able to do what some people thought was impossible, and the summit the great Mount Everest.
