Mount Yasur is an active volcano on Tana Island, Vanuatu with a height of 361 m above sea level, located on the coast near Sulphur Bay, that lies to the southeast of the taller mountain Tukosumera, which was active in the Plesistocene. It has a largely unvegetated pyroclastic cone with nearly a circular summit crater of 400 m in diameter. It is a stratovolcano caused by the eastward-moving Indo-Australian Plate being sub-ducted under the westward-moving Pacific plate. It has been erupting continuously for over 800 years, Mount Yasur can usually be approached safely. Its eruptions, which often occur several times an hour, are classified as Strombolian. the longitude and latitude of mt. yasur are 19.53° s, 169.442° e. Mount Yasur is a Cinder Cone, explosive volcano that in fact is placed along the Pacific Ring of Fire, and has been continuously erupting since 1774. However only 10 of these eruptions since Oct. 26 actually did some damage by effecting the weather or humans. When Yasur erupts often times what happens is Molten Rocks, Dust, Gas, Pyroclastic, Ash and most of all Lava shoots out. Mt Yasur was discovered by Captain James Cook, in 1774 he was out on his first European journey out to this island and apparently what attracted him was the firey glow of the explosion. Some interesting facts about Mt. Yasur is that it’s most active through late February and April during the wet season. A lot of rain means a higher groundwater level, possible allowing water to come into contact with hot rocks around the magma chamber. Three people have been killed over the years because they wandered to lower, unsafe areas. Mt Yasur has been called “the lighthouse of the pacific” because the more-or-less continuous Strombolian and volcanic activity since Cook’s first sighting. The…

The piece of artwork, done by Albert Bierstadt in 1863, titled Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak, is an oil on canvas and is of true inspirational beauty. He perfectly captures the cool, vivid colors of the real forest. The scene makes you feel extremely calm, peaceful, and serene due to the relaxing nature of the picture itself. The cast shadows make the painting very 3-D and make you feel as though you are standing directly in the field, looking at the scenery yourself. The more you observe the painting, the more you can hear the horses in the field, the water rushing down the fall, and the more you can smell the fresh rocky mountain air. The extreme detail in the horses, people, and forestry show Bierstadt's time and effort spent in perfecting this masterpiece.…

Greek mythology was used as a way to explain and provide reason for what was going on in the world. (Hamilton,1) These stories were used to "lead us back to a time when...people had a connection with the earth." (Hamilton,1) In this time, people had "little distinction between the real and unreal." (Hamilton, 1) The Greeks recognized twelve main gods, the brothers, sisters, and children of the king of the gods Zeus. (Bleiberg) Among these twelve was Zeus's son Apollo. Although Apollo is best known as the Greek god of music, archery, healing, light, and truth, he was also known for acts of destruction and nature's control of life.…

All-throughout my young childhood I have experienced camping and hiking. It is something that I loved when I was a child, and still love to this very day. From 24 mile hikes in the Grand Canyon, swimming in the pools of Havasupai falls to my favorite, hiking in Zion National Park. Zion is a marvel to behold. The park consists of huge massive canyon walls that soar to the sky. I have walked all-throughout Zion and have experienced it first hand, it is indescribable until you see it first hand. The walls are of mostly sandstone which vary in many beautiful colors. One thing that I can say, is during sunrise and sunset the canyon walls look like a glittering diamond of assorted colors glowing in the sun.. The park is considered to have some of the most elaborate canyons in the United States. Zion consists of many canyons, high Plateau and mesas. The National Park is located at the edge the Colorado Plateau. It is here that one can notice that the rock layers have been changed, eroded to what is called, “The Grand Staircase”.…
