The movie Unbroken revolves around the life of US Olympian and athlete Louis "Louie" Zamperini. The film opens showing Louie flying as a bomb aimer of a United States Army Air Forces B-24 Liberator bomber, during an April 1943 bombing mission against the Japanese-held island of Nauru. The plane he is abroad becomes seriously damaged resulting in many of the crew members becoming fatally injured. The hydraulics of the plane are shot and damaged, but the pilot, Phil, manages to salvage the plane at the end of the runway due to a flat tire.…

In the movie Unbroken directed by Angelina Jolie, there are many obvious differences from the actual factual events that took place. A lot of important details about Louis Zamperini’s life were left out in the movie. There are many reasons for this, which are arguably very important. The three biggest things that were left out of the movie are, the realization that Louis came to about his faith in God, Japanese guards actually treated Louis very well when he first was captured, and Louis actually came face to face with Adolf Hitler. All three of these things were left out of the movie for specific reasons, which Hollywood thought would boost ratings and amount of viewers.…
As the author Dr. Robert C. Thomas writes, Fear Eats the Soul “is a film of stairs and stares. Stares, because the entire film is made up of a series of looks: gazes that objectify, and trap, both the-one-being-looked-at and the one looking. These gazes are of such duration that they disturb and implicate the audience watching the film. Stairs, because we often see characters filmed behind staircases—or behind screens, railings, and staircases, simultaneously—often while being looked at, amplifying the objectification and policing of the characters.”. In our first encounter on the stairs Emmi has returned to her apartment with Ali. As they walk up the stairs Emmi’s neighbour tells her she has the 3 Marks 50 she owes her through a grilled shutter…
The Passion of the Christ is a movie based upon the last hours of Jesus' life. Though not all of what is potrayed in the movie is historically correct according to scripture. This set their central theme on the torture and crucifixion. The central theme of the four gospels is salvation and how Jesus taught, the intent of the movie deviates from scripture.…
People were fleeing Europe to join the Crusades in search of fortune or salvation. Europe was in a state of disease, poverty and famine; the people suffered greatly. During the Middle Ages, illness and misfortune was considered punishment from God for sins committed. It was thought that in order for people to be free of their despairs they had to ask for forgiveness and find salvation. That was why many people joined the Crusades, to redeem themselves in the eyes of God. Another reason for people to join the Crusades was for adventure, or a new chance at a better life. Men were often discontent and wanted to partake in war and be a hero. The land of Jerusalem also meant new opportunity, a place to set off to and forget the life left behind.…
Vincent Price’s monologue of “The Tell-Tale Heart” illustrates the severe insanity of the narrator. Due to his neighbor having a “vulture eye” that he hates, the narrator decided to kill him. Every night for eight nights, the crept into his neighbor’s room and shined a ray of light on the eye. On the night that he saw it, he pulled the man out of bed and threw it over top of him. Initially, I imagined the narrator to feel a mixture of anxiety and excitement due to the author using words like “nervous” and “uncontrollable terror”, but also speaking about being excited about the deed. Contrary to what I thought he would do, Vincent Price portrayed the man to be an odd mix of furious and a little bit nervous. While furrowing his eyebrows,…
Sister James and Sister Aloysius play a very important role in John Patrick Shanley’s movie Doubt, which is about the mistrust that takes place in a school directed by the church on priest Flynn command. There, sister Aloysius is the principal, so she is in charge of the student’s rights and responsibilities. On the other hand Sister James is a history teacher. Both characters are important for their way of handling the doubt.…
This essay will take an in-depth look at the history of Hollywood during the late 60s and early 70s. This period of time is considered to have been a renaissance for American cinema, and was titled the ‘New Hollywood’ by cotemporary critics of the time. In order to understand the changes that Hollywood went through the late ‘60s, you first have to examine the preceding era of Hollywood filmmaking during the 30s and 40s. This was a period that is commonly referred to as Hollywood’s Golden Age; when the dream factories were in full swing and the audiences were in regular attendance. This period of time could be defined by a number of social, political or economic contexts, but it’s the filmmaking practices that were employed at the time which…
Issues of discrimination to transgender also occur outside of detention centers. Kit Yan shared the social injustices he experienced as a queer, transgender, and Asian American in his performance Queer Heartache. He became aware of the unacceptance of transgenders in the US when he expressed his newfound queer identity through rainbow stickers on his new Jeep Cherokee. As a result, his lights were smashes and tires were broken. Like transgender detainees, Yan was out casted and assigned to a secluded dorm on college campus. Similarly to how detainees are told to silence when assaulted and rape, Yan was recommended that for his own safety he should remove the stickers which expressed his pride and identity. The treatment of both Yan and transgender detainees illustrates the degree of unacceptance the transgender community has received in the US society.…
"Lights! Camera! Action!" the dramatic yet traditional prompt associated with Hollywood and the pictures. Hollywood appears to be this extraordinary glamorous world; however, in reality is it? Many people dream of being in the limelight of Hollywood; where there is an endless amount of money, power, and fame. Society fails to examine what's behind fame; the dark, twisted, and the ugly truths hiding within those exact words. Billy Wilder explores and divulges the dark yet unknown, harsh realities of fame, following Hollywood's transition from silent pictures to talkies; with his film Sunset Boulevard.…
In the text Angel is labelled a cold-hearted killer, but since meting Paolo his life changed for the better. It all changed when he had the chance to kill two people but he didn’t. He just simply tied them up and stole their donkey and horse. “It wasn’t nice to do that.” Pg47 Luis said. Luis argued with Angel about stealing the horse but it was a lot better then killing them. Because Angel did that, now all three can now make…
The movie "A Bronx Tale" is obviously set in the Bronx and sets a young man Calogero Anello, "C" against the trials and tribulations of growing up incorruptible, in a neighborhood of mob crime and wayward minors. The movie holds characters that fit delinquency terms such as chronic offenders, and characters that fit theories such as the choice theory. Calogero at the end of the movie seems to have an identity crisis as mentioned by Erikson in his theory. Also characters show signs of being latent delinquents, and some characters seem to attribute their actions to the social learning theory. The movie as a whole is a great sign to see the varying degrees of delinquency especially in urban communities. I think the movie also gives people…
Everyone, at least once in their lifetime, has been an advocate for the bad guy; whether it would be Heith Ledger, playing the Joker, verses Batman or the innocent Satan verses the tyrant God. John Milton does a fantastic job in letting his audience observe Satan in a new manner that one has not analyzed before. Milton portrays Satan as the most likable character in Paradise Lost, yet he is thought of being the foulest individual in the social realm. Satan stands above the rest of the characters in the poem, a once archangel casted out of heaven, trying to find his way in the universe. Although he is depicted as the most sentimental character of the poem, Satan is still the profound angel that society recognizes him as today. Milton’s exclusive…
The film, Life Is Beautiful, is about a Jewish Italian man, Guido, that falls in love with a woman, Dora, he meets on the road while repairing his car. Guido’s destination is his Uncle Eliseo’s home, where he will be staying. When in Italy, Guido and Dora continue running into each other, soon making Dora begin to like him. After some time, Dora and Guido get married and have a son, Giosue (Joshua). Throughout the first half of the movie, we are exposed to the political changes occurring in Italy, such as discrimination against Jews and the public exclusions made towards them. One day, Guido, Uncle Eliseo, and Giosue are taken on Giosue’s birthday by the Nazi’s and are forced to get on a crowded train to get to the concentration camp. Dora,…
