The hero that I most identify with in Hinson’s Courageous Faith, is Gideon.1 I have previously discussed my Army career where I served as a senior leader. I held various leadership positions for 28 of my 31 years of service. Gideon was not a leader, in fact, he was a frightened farmer who is hiding in a pit trying to remove the wheat from the chaff. 2 I am the opposite of Gideon when it comes to leadership. The Lord had to teach Gideon how to lead, or shall I say Gideon had to submit to the Lord so he could be a leader-sheep, as God wanted him to. I, on the other hand, have submitted to God for the ability to be a follower-sheep.…

One exegetical approach to this story is to examine the story 's historical context and its literary genre. An examination of the story 's historical context is crucial in discovering the events that led up to the parable being told and why the story was told. Jesus uses parables as a method to teach spiritual truths. The context shows that the lawyer is initially engaged in a legal debate with Jesus. Then there are the two religious leaders, the priest and the Levite. They are both bound by the laws of defilement (Lev 21:1-4 and Num 19:11-13), that gives them a reasonable excuse not to help the victim. The unexpected hero of the story is the despised Samaritan. Finally, Jesus challenges the lawyer to go and do as the Samaritan had done. By doing this, “Jesus is voicing a much broader universal call for a reduction in inter-group, religio-ethnic conflict" (Esler, 2000 cited in Towey, 2013: 102). This exegetical approach yields a clearer interpretation of the…

Nonetheless, his prison time was essentially just a waiting game for the officers. All they had to do was get him to sign a paper indicating that what he did was wrong. For Mr. Chiu, things got a lot worse, as he was essentially interrogated, being continually told his thoughts were lies, and on top of all that, he had seemingly contracted a fever. He remained in this mindset that he was correct until they jailed a former law student, which was a lawyer at this point, which ended up turning into more of a bribe than anything else for the…
