Movie Report: The Outsiders
The Outsiders, elucidates that friendship becomes the most vital value in a world where parental influence is scarce and violence seems to be the only answer.
Constantly in conflict are the two social groups known as the Socs, the rich and privileged, and the Greasers, the poor ‘hoods’, yet both find common ground in the fact that friendship is immensely important .

The depth of the friendship between Johnny and Ponyboy can only be explained with one word, unbreakable. Both boys confide in each other and express feelings, dreams and opinions that they knew only each other would understand, “‘You ain’t like any of the gang. I mean, I couldn’t tell Two-Bit or Steve or even Darry about the sunrise and clouds and stuff...I mean, they just don’t dig. Only you ...(5.96).’”The unity of the friendship shared between Johnny and Ponyboy is defined even more when Johnny kills the Soc, Robert Sheldon, defending Ponyboy, afterwards Ponyboy displays the strength of their friendship yet again by following Johnny to Windrixville, escaping the police.

The intimate bond that Ponyboy has with Johnny is also similar to the friendship he shares with the Soc, Sherry ‘Cherry’ Valance. The formation of the friendship between Pony and Cherry is one which breaks the barriers society appears to have set them, proving that Socs and Greasers can be friends. Both Pony and Cherry share similar ideas and concepts, within a few hours of knowing each other they begin to reveal some of their inner most deep thoughts. “‘I never told anyone that. I think you’re the first person I’ve ever really gotten through to... (3.47)’”. Cherry also has the ability to show Pony that the Socs aren’t as spoilt as they appear to be, “‘Things are rough all over... (2.43)’”. Cherry continues to honour her friendship with Pony, even after Johnny kills Bob, Cherry’s boyfriend.

The term “opposites attract” does not only apply to Ponyboy and Cherry but also Dally and Johnny. To say that Johnny and Dallas were

Behind Dally’s rough exterior, Johnny saw his gallant and heroic side. Dally, on the other hand, represented the anger and hatred the Greasers had towards their archenemies, the Socs. With Johnny gone, the harmony that once existed had now disappeared. If Dally had not died shortly after Johnny, the gang would have lost sight of the dream Johnny had for them and followed Dally’s downward spiral. Ponyboy implied this when he narrated, “He (Dally) had quite a reputation….you had to respect him.” (11 Hinton) The Greasers most likely would follow in the footsteps of Dally and even channel Dally’s frustrations with the Socs, the world, and life in general. Moreover, this hatred would have driven the Greasers all to a life of crime and with the attitude of dying young. “You’d better wise up Pony….you get tough like me and you don’t get hurt.” (147 Hinton) as said by Dally. Ponyboy would have been the most influenced and would have never have grown up to become his own…

In the story “The Outsiders”, Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny spent lonely days together in an old church which strengthened their friendship because there was no one else to talk to and they only had each other. I know this because Ponyboy said to Johnny, “You ain't like any of the gang. I mean, i couldn't tell Two-Bit or Steve or even Darry about the sunrise and clouds and stuff” (Hinton 78). He means that he trusts Johnny and feels Johnny can understand him like Sodapop can and he feels that he can be himself around Johnny and not have to act tuff. Another example is when Ponyboy said, “On the fifth day I had read up to Sherman’s siege of Atlanta in Gone with the Wind, owed Johnny a hundred and fifty bucks from poker games” (Hinton 79).…

Pony “hates the Socs as bitterly and contemptuously as Dally Winston hated”, but learns they are not all bad. Pony being a Greaser does not go hand and hand with the Socs and think they are a group of “cold-hearted” mean people with no emotion or feelings in them. However, when Ponyboy makes friends with Cherry Valance, who is a Soc, Pony realizes that all Socs are not that bad. Cherry convinces Pony that the Socs and the Greasers may not be that different that “it is rough all over”, with some Socs feeling what Pony felt, lost and needed somewhere to…

The town dislikes both gangs, but in particular the greasers. The greasers are disliked much more than the socs because they are poor and dirty. Even though the socs are in fact even more ruthless than the greasers, they are "socially acceptable" due to their appearance and money. One night the socs make a surprise attack on Ponyboy and his Johnny, and in self-defense Johnny kills a soc. They run to a close friends (Dallas) house. Dallas gives them some money and tells them to go to an abandoned church out of town. So they spend a couple nights there. One day after going out to buy groceries they return to the church to see that it is on fire. Ponyboy and Johnny went in to save the children from the burning church. Johnny is trapped inside. Dallas goes into save him. Then, the church collapses. They are rushed to the hospital. Ponyboy and Dallas are okay, but Johnny is severely injured. Ponyboy talks with one of the Socs and they both discuss about how they are tired of fighting. Everyone should be equal . Later, the Greasers and Socs get into an enormous brawl , but in the end the Greasers win.…

Ponyboy, Darry and Sodapop are part of the greasers, who they like to look as their family since their parents passed away in an accident. The greaser-soc rivalry mainly revolves around the economic status of both gangs. Socs hate greasers because they are rich and greasers are poor; greasers hate socs because they are poor and socs are rich, simple. After some events Ponyboy and Johnny find themselves in a life threatening situation where they are jumped by some socs at night in an empty parking lot; in the suspense of the moment Johnny kills one of the socs (called Bob) who was about to drown Ponyboy to death. Ponyboy and Johnny decide that Dallas Winston was the correct person to ask help to since he had a lot of experience in the area. Dallas tells them to take a train to Windrixville and hide in…

“Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave.”(Pg.3) This means that the three of them have to support each other and help each other provide what a parent normally would. This means that their lives are held together with friendship between them to keep going. “‘Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold…’ The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died.”(Pg.148) This demonstrates the strong friendship that Ponyboy had with Johnny. This also shows that Johnny wanted Ponyboy to stay gold, and that their friendship was so strong that Johnny was trying to help Ponyboy down to his last breath. The power of friendship is shown in the book through Darry, Soda, Ponyboy, and…

The title of this book is related to the story, because in the novel, Ponyboy and Johnny are outsiders. They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive.…

The Socs make underprivileged people's lives distressing. They also jump them for kicks. Ponyboy refers to them as cold blooded men who are heartless and don’t feel anything. "We’re sophisticated – cool to the point of not feeling. Nothing is real for us." Page 47. Still, not all Socs are like that. For instance Cherry Valance and Ponyboy Curtis get along, sharing their love for literature and sunsets. Their bond can fill the gap between rich and poor. As Cherry said (on page 42), "things are rough all over."’ Before Ponyboy met Cherry he thought all Socs were rich kids who acted cruelly without motivation.…
