Below is a letter which King Ferdinand sent along with Columbus on his second voyage to Haiti. It was to be communicated to the Taino/Arawak Indians. It is a fascinating document. The King wants the Indians to acknowledge the Christian religion and God, and to accept the authority of the King of Spain. The letter is a mix of promises of benefits that will come to them, but quickly followed up with the direst of threats if they do no comply.…

Why did my mom decide to move into a house where the owner didn't want to talk about it, but I think she moved here because we couldn't afford our old house because my step dad's source of income wasn't here anymore. When I typed in my address and the first thing I saw was tons of Wikipedia and websites on my house. I was shocked to see so many, when I clicked one way my jaw dropped like Pacquiao in the match vs Mayweather.. What I saw was disturbing, there have been many reports of family death in that house we lived in. Now it all made sense, that's why those boys would always call my house “That scary house on the block”. I needed to inform my mom about this right away, I wasn't looking forward to die. People said was a ghost others said it was a monster what every the hell it was, I knew I wasn't going to get in its…

When I walked in the doors of our house, I looked to the left where our couch was and saw my parents sitting facing towards me with nervous faces. I set my bag on the ground next to the door, and I set my shoes next to my bag. I slowly turned around and walked towards the couch, hesitant to take a step forward. Part of me considered bolting--running for the door. Their faces were plastered with anxiety, and I tried to think of what I had done. Nothing clear came to mind. Once I finally sat down, I looked at my parents and said, “What's wrong?”…

When I was about eight years old I found out we were moving. The walls seemed to have come crashing in. What? Moving? I remember being devastated beyond repair, knowing that our yard and our neighborhood that I loved so dearly didn’t have a spot in my future. Secretly excited about the new place, I couldn’t wait to move in. A few months of packing and storing went by and we moved into the new house. An apartment?…

It all started with this very simple question, “Do you want to move to Florida?” When my mom had asked that, we had just came back from our spring break vacation in Florida. We lived in Kentucky and my siblings and I went to St. Albert, I was in fifth grade. Of course when my mom said that my whole family thought it was a joke, so we all had said sure to the idea. About a week later, I forgot about the question, so after school one day my parents had told me and my siblings they had a surprise for us. Little did I know that we were actually moving to Florida.…

I remember the day clearer than any other. I was in 5th grade. My mom sat me down and told me my father would be living in another home. They called it “temporary.” “It will end” “It is not divorce”, they said. This, age nine, is when the constant packing, unpacking and swapping from house to house began. This lasted about a year until my Dad moved back in. We were whole, again. That was the happiest month I can really remember. Having two parents say goodnight to me, not having to repeat each story twice, and meals with someone at each head of the table. Everything was perfect. Until we decided to all go out to a family dinner. At this dinner my parents dropped one word.…

Next stop, onion picking! Samantha planted close to a hundred onions, we pulled them out of the ground and it made you cry like a baby. They smelled so strong even though they were not yet fully grown. The farm used to have an apple tree but it had so many apples on it that it split in half. I learned that when you pick onions you should pick one with the biggest top and also use a shovel because they do not like being pulled out of the ground. Samantha screamed when she pulled her onion out of the ground, a bunch of worms accompanied the onion. While Samantha was struggling her grandpa said to her…
