Before I started my college career, I had an abundance of friends and family members who would often encourage me to reach my goals. That did not work so well because they told me things that I wanted to hear instead of things that I needed to hear in order to be successful. Everything that I was doing beforehand was hurting me now. After failing my first anatomy and physiology exam, I realized that my old study habits we're not working. I needed to develop a new system in which I could study effectively. I needed to eliminate distractions such as cellular devices, television, and friends from my study area. After failing that exam, I thought about when my brother told me that “College will be easy” but he was wrong. Then I knew that I could not go through college the same way that I went through high school. At first I thought that I would be alright with a C average in the course. Then I realized that I did not want to be labeled as “average.” The curriculum is completely different and it was completely new for me, I needed to adjust and I needed to adjust quickly. I knew that I needed to be motivated within my school work and my school environment, but I also needed to be self-motivated in other aspects of my life such as health. Being more than two hours away from home, I made sure that I took on my responsibilities and was accountable for my own actions.
