William Somerset Maugham was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s. Maugham's style is clear-cut and elegant. The attitude of the novelist to his character seems mostly to be cynically sarcastic. A play upon contrasts and contradictions lies at the basis of Maugham's sarcastic method in portraying his characters. The story under analysis , «Mr know all» , is about boat trip of the narrator from San Francisco to Yokohama. His neighbor in two –berths cabin is Mr.Kelada, also called Mr know all, because of his behavior .He is very sociable, he tries to please everyone, and to be everywhere, he is sure that always right and tries to prove it. But in happened dispute with Mr. Ramsay about quality of chain of his wife Mrs. Ramsay , Kelada admits that he is wrong , despite he is right in fact ,to save reputation of women.
