In his report, “Kid Kustomers,” Eric Schlosser discovers the tactics marketers and manufacturers utilize to target children. Schlosser claims that since the 1980s when working parents spent less and less time with their kids, they felt it necessity to spend more money on them. Manufacturers took advantage and began to promote a kid-related appearance. They started by observing children of specific ages to discover their interests and habits, receiving much of their information from the Internet and kids’ clubs. This provided the marketers insights on how to improve their business plan to attract more children and create “cradle-to-grave” customers. Their strategies often resulted in clever mascots…

Eric Schwitsbebel’sargument in the beginning of the paper talks about not remembering the name of his roommate but also still being able to say some information about him. Which means that although he is not fully correct on the information he still does know some things. This goes with his example of the teacher and explaining prime number. He says that it is logical to think that one is a prime number but that it is not and it could bring some confusion to the students when they ask about it. So instead of confusing the kids and them thinking it is a prime she should specify in the beginning that every other number that are prime, except one. Although she may believe that one is a prime this would not say that she believes in it nor that…

In Daniel L. Schafer’s book Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley: African Princess, Florida Slave, Plantation Slaveowner, the life of a somewhat mysterious African born woman is broken down. There were many challenges to writing a biography on a woman who did not write any letters nor kept a diary on the events of her life. This and the fact that she was an African slave in the beginning of her life over in Florida made writing such a biography all the more challenging. I feel that Schafer has succeeded in providing an organized and descriptive piece on a historical figure whose background has very much been shrouded in mystery and uncertainty. The book stays true to the thesis and keeps Anna Madgigine Jai at the center of every topic.…

Juxtaposition is often used in this book of short stories. It is the fact of two things that are completely different and create a contrasting effect, being put together. Danticat uses the variety of stories to help break down the harsh Haitian life. In each story, each character is experiencing their own problems and trying to take things day by day. In the book Krik Krak, a series of short stories, the author Danicat utilizes juxtaposition to create strong and positive characters that in return create the overall sense of hope throughout the book. The specific examples that best display positive characters creating an overall sense of hope, are a girl separated from her boyfriend, a daughter with a positive mindset, and a father who tries to be strong for the sake of his family.…

Alan B. Krueger and Jitka Maleckova bring a simple correlation to poverty and terrorism. There is no doubt that education directly correlates to the success of the individual. “Instead of viewing terrorism as a direct response to low market opportunities or lack of education, we suggest it is more accurately viewed as a response to political conditions and long-standing feelings of indignity and frustration (perceived or real) that have little to do with economics.” “Alan B. Krueger and Jitka Maleckova” Does Poverty Cause Terrorism?, June 23 2002. Directly relating this to the problems in the Middle East is simple enough with what has been developing over the last few years there. Terrorism is defined as violence for or against a state, though it is sometimes difficult to tell, like in the Middle East, who is actually the legitimate government. Though the widely accepted definition is "premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by…

The first idea that I would like to present is the concept of overexploitation. Kolbert first introduced this topic when she was discussing about the auk, or Pinguinus impennis. First, she explained that the auk was a large flightless bird that lived in the Northern Hemisphere. As time went on, the birds ranged from “Norway to Newfoundland and from Italy to Florida,” (58). As the chapter progresses, the emphasis was taken away from the bird and it was pointed toward the use of the bird. As the first settlers arrived in Iceland from Scandinavia, the great auks were very common as they were featured in the dinners of these immigrants. However, the popularity of the great auk’s kept increasing and different countries wanted the bird for there…

One conflict experienced in the play is the relationship between Katie and her mother before and after the death of Katie’s father. Katie and her mother don’t have the best relationship and at times it seems that Katie wishes that she would’ve been in the car accident with her father. This is a conflict because it seems as if Katie may blame her mother for the death of her father for making him go out while she stayed at home and took care of Katie. This causes a lot of tension between Katie and her mother because she also feels as though the death of her father might also be her fault. At the end of the play Katie and her mother appear to be closer to each other and her mother even apologizes for the things she’s done in the past and talks about Katie’s father. This is important because after years of not really speaking about him it shows that their mother is just starting to cope with his death. Her mother states…

Thank you for disclosing your observations on the McKensie and Kress study. I enjoyed your insights in point one on the No Child Left Behind Act. I do disagree with you on the NCLBA law. As a former educator, I saw firsthand that the law was unfair to teachers and had expectations that were increasingly unrealistic. Moreover, as I have stated in another post, I believe excellent teachers should never lose their jobs based on the outcomes of any standardized test. Those individuals that believe teachers should lose jobs over assessment results do not understand all the factors that could influence the performance of students on those exams. It would be frightening to think my job would depend on the performance of a student some standardized…
