9/11 was dispiriting for everyone in the United States of America. No one came back on late-night TV for a spell. So when Letterman stepped out, he was better than ever. He became even more respected than he already was. This confirmed his spot on the hierarchy of late-night comedy. Through the years Letterman started as college audience and worked his way through that generation to the next. “And there is something a little awkward about Letterman, the King of absurdity, still presiding over his anti-talk show circus at 67. It’s not that he can’t pull it off -- it’s that he has been doing it for so long. His original college audience now has children (and grandchildren!) of their own” (CNN W 1). Although, it is amazing that Letterman stayed on for his 33 years. Not many people can through generations of people and do it with ease. He doesn’t like to be followed like any normal celebrity. But when news came out that the confined host had an affair, all chaos was let out. “Letterman admitted on his show Thursday that he had affairs with female employees of the show. The on-air revelation came after he testified before a grand jury that he was threatened by a man that would release the information unless Letterman paid 2 million dollars as a truce”(UPI 1). With controversy there is either running from it or taking it head on. Letterman took it with a tenacious manner. He apologized with sincerity on his show and fulfilled what needed to be said.
