Mr Mom In The News Summary
In the study Mr. Mom in the News: The Relationship Between Stereotypes and Gendered News Stories, the purpose was to see whether peoples preconceived stereotypes influence their perceptions of news stories involving gender. The authors discovered that people’s stereotypes about gender roles and the content of the news stories were not predictors on whether someone would enjoy an article or not. They also discovered that those who had stereotypes about women responded more negatively regardless of the experiment’s condition. This means that people who already have stereotypes about women and about gender roles in society before reading an article will respond negatively no matter what the article’s content is. Hoewe, et al. partially support their first theory that, women who hold stereotypes about women will find stories about stay-at-home mothers more realistic than stories about stay-at-home fathers. They disproved their second theory that, women who hold stereotypes about women will enjoy a story …show more content…
Advocates of this theory would say that because the public is less supportive of stay-at-home fathers than they are of stay-at-home mothers, a father staying home to take care of the children might be a violation of some people’s expectations. In the article, the author states that, “If a woman believes that men and women hold different social soles, she will view deviations from these norms as unrealistic.” This statement is along the same lines as the EVT. Advocates of the EVT would agree with the result of the first theory, that women who had more stereotypes about gender roles were less likely to believe the articles. Many stereotypes claim that women should be the ones staying home with the children, and a man being the one to do it would violate their expectations, making it less likely to

In an article titled "Stay-at-home-dads" Glenn Stacks addressed the topic from a different view. Sterotypes for gender roles could be harmful to the relationship a couple has. Starting off the stereotype of men being the provider of the family causes them to focus on their career to ensure the safety of his family. This cause the other partner to focus on raising the children. Who is to say that the male and female want those roles, maybe the women would be happier if she was working and the male happier if he was at home with the kids. As Glenn states with his own family, both partners are happier taking on the role of the other gender. Glenn's wife had a career that she was very interested in and Glenn didn't want to miss all the first his…

Perhaps one of the most prevalent, and yet widely unnoticed phenomena in society is that of gender stereotyping. It is prevalent in that it exists not only as a product of media, a cultivated image by a few, but also as common and subconscious characterizations developed in every individual. While it is both the blatant portrayals of iconic stereotypes on television and the stinging sexist remarks heard in everyday life that bring stereotyping to one’s attention, it is just as real and potent in the ways it falls under the radar.…

The general consensus of a woman today is no longer confined to the home as a housekeeper and mother taking care of her children. Great strides have been made for women. Today, women are CEOs, hold political offices, business owners, police officers, and much more. Not only are women all of these, but they continue to be the mother and housekeeper as well. They are not simply seen as the weaker sex, but are now seen as intellectually equal to their male counterparts. In some instances, the roles have been reversed in this modern age and some women are the wage earners of the family and the male is the housekeeper and…

Gender stereotypes need to be stomped out and vanish. Everyone is who they are for a reason, and that’s because no one else is like you. But today, everyone goes with what’s in through the media. Being thin, having a lot of makeup caked on and doing your hair all the time, and men be super manly on tv/commercials. Cooking, beauty, and masculinity are three of most likely hundreds of more stereotypes that have been addressed in not just my paper, but…

Social stigmas accompany every one of life’s categories – especially male and female. Gender-based stereotypes – existent since the beginning of time – help in both the advancement and hindrance of the sexes and of society. Gender roles helped create society. They generated a world in which the man went out into the world in order to work and provide monetarily for his family while the woman stayed in the home, working hardly to accomplish the couple’s domestic responsibilities and to raise the couple’s children. This traditional notion of the roles of genders enabled families to function in history; however, in the modern-day era, this notion only thwarts progress. As women travel out into the work place, they are not treated as the equals of men. The societal perception of the weak, lesser woman still remains, preventing women to become truly equal. On the contrary, gender stereotypes also inhibit the growth of men, causing them to feel compelled to follow the traditional definition of masculinity. Gender should be seen as fluid (with personality characteristics and preferred hobbies that can be demonstrated and admired by both sexes), rather than as a rigid set of characteristics needed to be met. Societal expectations of gender differences should not be forced upon people.…
