law for states to deny citizenship on the basis of race. Although this was a step in the right direction for a rationalized solution to citizen rights for more egalitarianism within the nation, the political and civil inequality was only set to grow further. Following the fourteenth amendment came the equal protection clause and fifteenth amendment, both set to help solidify the groundwork for a better United States. To all egalitarians dismay, the introduction of Jim Crow Laws, laws that promoted the segregation and discrimination of African Americans¬, paved the way for further inequality. Jim Crow Laws authorized the segregation of many public sites such as schools, hospitals, and even water fountains. This unjust practice was fought against by many, unfortunately, to add…

Confidentiality is central to trust between doctors, medical team and patients. Patients have a right to expect that information about them will be held in confidence. The birth of the Hippocratic Oath in the fourth century started the responsibility of physicians to preserve the privacy and confidentiality of their patients. One of the provisions of the Oath lays the ethical foundation for the physician’s duty of confidentiality even beyond the circumstances of medical care. The Florence Nightingale Pledge, which was composed in 1893, was a modification of the “Hippocratic Oath,” a statement of the ethics and principles of the nursing profession. Included in the pledge is to hold in confidence all personal matters. Today we have the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which was passed by Congress in 1996. One of the regulations requires protection and confidential handling of protected health information. We also have the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) who takes an active role against potential violations in patient confidentiality (Oram M., 2008). This paper will consider the ethical implication of a breach of confidentiality with ethical principles. An alternative will be to address the dilemma in a clinical setting. Lastly, the author will address how an ethics committee might approach the dilemma using ethical principles, theories, and a team effort to ethical decision-making.…

It borders both the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia on its southern end. Until 1939, Qatar’s economy consisted mostly of pearl-fishing in the gulf. However, massive discovered oil and natural gas reserves made the country into a massive exporter of fossil fuels (85% of current exports earnings), with the majority of its economy built on this. Today, because of this massive industry, Qatar is the richest country in the world, and has one of the highest per-capita GDPs. However, global warming would have a dramatic effect on the geography of Qatar. Due to its flat topography surrounded by water, sea level rise would take a massive amount of land away from the country (18% of land area with a 5m sea level rise). With 96% of the population living along the coast, this would be devastating. The desert (82mm of rainfall per year) also has a scarcity of drinkable water, forcing it to use desalinization of sea water and the small amount of groundwater…
