Mr. Nuttel's Use Of Direct Characterization In The Open Window

Authors can describe characters in many different ways. The author of “The Open Window” uses direct characterization, indirect characterization, and motivation to describe Vera and Mr. Nuttel. To begin, one way authors describe characters is to use direct characterization. This describes what a character is like. Saki describes Vera as self-possessed, curious,and talkative. According to Saki, Vera is “...a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen.” Describing Vera as self-possessed is describing what she is like, her personality, so it is direct characterization. In the story Vera is very talkative. She is telling Mr. Nuttel about a loss that her aunt had. Showing that Vera is talkative is an example of direct characterization.
