    On October1, 1750 Peter Salem was born. Peter Salem was a black African American soldier and patriot. Though Salem’s birth year is not certain he was born a slave in Framingham, Massachusetts. His owner, Jeremiah Belknap, named him after his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts. In America’s early years, Massachusetts, monitoring an insurrection by Blacks, made it illegal for them to serve in the military. When the need for soldiers increased during the French and Indian Wars Blacks were pressed into military duty. In mid-1775, the Massachusetts Committee of Safety recruited only free Blacks. Salem had been sold to Major Lawson Buckminster, who freed him. He became one of the Minutemen heroes of the American Revolutionary War. On April 19, 1775, he fought at Concord, Massachusetts. A week later, he enlisted in Colonel Nixon's Fifth Massachusetts Regiment. He served in Captain Drury's company and fought with Drury at the Battle of Bunker Hill. At dawn on June 17, 1775, General William Howe ordered fire on the Americans three times and drove them northward across Bunker Hill. In this battle the Americans had 400 dead and wounded men; the British lost more than 1,000. Salem was credited with the shot that killed British Major John Pitcairn. Salem re-enlisted in 1776 and fought at Saratoga and Stony Point. General George Washington forbade blacks from soldiering. After Virginia's governor, Lord Dunmore, freed slaves to serve the British, Washington reversed his own orders, and in January 1776, Salem re-enlisted. After the war, Salem built a cabin near Leicester, Massachusetts, and worked as a cane weaver. He died in the Framingham poorhouse in 1816. He is buried at the Old Burying Ground. In 1882, the town of Framingham erected a monument in his honor.…

Disturbed by the racial prejudice of the Southern States of America, Griffin undertakes a bold social experiment and lives as a Negro for two months in the South. Set in 1959, Griffin undertakes a series of medical supervised drugs and tanning salons to change the colour of his skin. As a white, catholic journalist Griffin is shocked by the extent of the racial prejudice he encounters and how deeply it affects him. The systematic barriers created and fostered by the white society in these southern states creates a lack of belonging for the negro population deemed inferior which disturbingly is fostered by the white community. However from this racial exclusion what also surprised Griffin was the kindness and racial solidarity that he encountered amongst the Negro community. The connections and sense of belonging within the Negro community deeply affected him and on completion of the social experiment he is left with a feeling of not belonging to either community.…

    It is an irrefutable fact that we should help each other. However sometimes help to others poses some danger to either us or others. In Peter Singer's essay "Famine Affluence, and Morality" Peter Singer argues that we ought, morally, to prevent starvation due to famine. Singer begins by saying that assistance has been inadequate as richer countries prioritize development above preventing starvation. Singer then states that "suffering and death from lack of food, shelter, and medical care are bad" (404) and assumes that it is uncontroversial enough to be accepted without justification. He then next raises the linked premise that we morally ought to prevent something 'bad' from happening as long as we have the means and it does not entail compromising on anything of 'comparable moral significance', using the analogy of a drowning child and hence assuming the principle _of "_universalizability" (405). As Singer writes, he attempts to justify why he feels that it is within our means to do so without sacrificing anything morally significant, and concludes that we hence morally ought to prevent starvation due to famine.…

Brown’s “Restoring Perspective: $1,000 for the Prom Is Immoral”, I believe he is attempting to show the importance of the morality of money and I think in made the prom his main point. My hero is the principal, who canceled his school's senior prom, not just to prevent underage drinking and sex at post-event parties, but also to make the kids and parents consider how they spend their money. It is the best recent example of an authority figure standing up to both the culture of conspicuous consumption and of rights without responsibilities. When teenagers, or for that matter adults, think it is the norm to spend $200 on tennis shoes, $250 on blue jeans and $5 on a cup of coffee, it's no wonder our society has lost its sense of perspective (Burton, 2011, pg. 9). What Kenneth Hoagland, the principal at Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale, N.Y., did in refusing to accept the excesses of the prom, which he rightly labeled “an exaggerated rite of passage that verges on decadence,” was demonstrate common sense. Hoagland rightly thought that there is something innately wrong with students spending $1,000 or more on their prom outfit, flowers, limousines and the rest. And that didn't count the cost of the post-prom parties at beach houses or “booze cruises” that students attended, where the use of alcohol and the lack of supervision created “a time of heightened sexuality in a culture of anything goes,” as he put it. Kellenberg High School, he said, “Is willing to sponsor a prom, but not an orgy” (Burton, 2011, pg. 9).…

    It’s a man’s world… That statement is as stereotypical and offensive as it is wrong, but even today, many people still believe it to be true. Zoe Flower felt that way about the video gaming industry before she researched and wrote her article “Getting the Girl: The Myths, Misconceptions, and Misdemeanors of Females in Games” (Alfano 329-33) for Playstation Magazine nearly a decade ago. She begins her work believing that in a time when women are struggling to become more empowered in society they are still being sexualized, objectified and exploited in the video game world. However, she is surprised by what she discovers and is able to see the video gaming industry in an entirely different light. In her article, Ms. Flower uses all three of Plato’s rhetorical appeals (Pathos, Logos, and Ethos) but the dominating appeal is Ethos in addition to considerable use of the Logos appeal. Considering the sensitive subject matter one would expect the Pathos appeal be most prominent yet it is used the least which is surprising. After reading the article the thing that stands out is not only the facts she learns about female character development, but also, whom she learns it from. Ms. Flower is able to interview several top executives from multiple video game development companies. This lends instant credibility (Ethos) to the facts (Logos) that she presents regarding the development of female video game characters. It ultimately builds a compelling argument that today’s popular female video game characters are not just another example of female exploitation but possibly even another step forward in the plight of female empowerment. This is the theme throughout the article, Ms. Flowers continually builds her argument, mostly by utilizing those two rhetorical appeals (Ethos & Logos).
