After this proposal during the senate, false allegations towards Smith’s motives surfaced, and he was too idealistic to defend himself against the political machine that was accusing him of self-interest. Making matters worse, Senator Smith was a genuinely honest and simple-minded man, making it difficult for him to survive with his corrupt colleagues. Mr. Smith clearly showed his lack of government and knowledge of it. Jefferson Smith was a senator and did not even know how a bill becomes a law. Smith was like a fish out of water in the senate and needed a lot of help from his assistant Saunders.

Burr, Hamilton, and Jefferson, a character Analysis. Closely follows the lives of three of the United States greatest politicians as they struggle to create and maintain a new nation. In the appendix of the book the author, Roger Kennedy, explains how he shows sympathy for historical losers and often doubts some triumphs of winners in history books. So in this book, it's obvious Mr. Kennedy shows a bias to Aaron Burr, a lesser-known founder. One such example of this is throughout the book Roger belittles Hamilton and Jefferson to try and show how Burr was more honest and credible then the history books show him to be.…

R.B. Bernstein, a professor of law at New York Law School, and author of nearly twenty books on Early American legal and diplomatic history, is one of the latest in the long list of historians to attempt to tackle the life of Jefferson. In his work, Thomas Jefferson, Bernstein provides a well-organized and balanced history of Jefferson as he traces his life from his birth into one of Virginia’s wealthiest families, to his death as a man who was ridden with debt and insecure of his place in history. Published in 2003, the strength of Bernstein’s text does not lie in its ability to dissect this enigma of history, but in his ability to lay out his life and offer the facts as they exist without adding too much of his own opinion. Bernstein’s ability to write without muddling up the information he is presenting gives the reader a fairly unbiased look at the man who, in most of the other works he is covered in, takes the form of the authors perceptions. This is not to say that he does not give Jefferson credit for his achievements, or fault him where he deserves it, but Bernstein is able to point out these positive and negative features of Jefferson’s life without adding too much conjecture.…

Alexander Hamilton, one of the most important people of the time, was the first Secretary of the Treasury. Utilizing federal power to modernize the nation, he convinced Congress to use an elastic interpretation of the Constitution to pass laws that Jefferson deemed unconstitutional. Underwood’s steadfast fortitude is well established, but specifics regarding the measures he takes have yet to be examined. As an American politician, Underwood is no stranger to embellishment of reality and cunning deceit, yet he seldom stops there. Tactics of this nature are common knowledge and common practice in today’s political climate. This is in stark contrast to Thomas Jefferson’s view of democracy. Jefferson believed unequivocally in an informed public, and the methods of Frank Underwood would likely cause him great ire. Jefferson’s disapproval would also be inclusive of Underwood’s aspirations of power. “It was Jefferson who pointed out that there is ‘no safe depository of the ultimate power of the society but the people themselves’, that if citizens are ‘not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them but to inform their discretion’” (Kakabadse et al. 292). With these words, the contrast between Jefferson’s ideals and Underwood’s techniques is overwhelmingly incontestable, since Underwood not only deceives the American public, but all others barring his…
