Mangalore refinery and petrochemicals limited
(mrpl),located at kuthetoor, at mangalore on the west coast of in theevergreen dakshina kannada district. This has the distinction of being a first joint refinery in india, promoted by hpcl and adityabirla group of companies and now is a subsidiary of ongc.the refinery has a versatile design with high flexibility to processcrudes of various api and with high degree of automation. Mrplhas a design capacity to process 9.69 million metric tonnes per annum from its first two phases and further 3 million metric tonnesper annum from its third phase, which is being constructed. It is theonly refinery in india to have two hydrocrackers producingpremium diesel (high cetane).state of art technology, efficient systems of internationalstandard(iso 9001 to iso 14001), a team of committed employeesand backing of the parent company have converted mrpl into amajor player in the refinerysector and had a turnover of rs. 36000 crores during last year.before acquisition by ongc in march 2003, mrpl was a jointventure oil refinery promoted by m/s hindustan petroleumcorporation limited.mrpl has high standards in refining and environment protectionmatched by its commitments to the society. Mrpl has alsodeveloped a green belt around the entire refinery with plantspecies selected specially to blend with the flora. Manufacturing facilities
MRPL has the unique distinction of having two hydrocrackers andtwo CCR units in one complex which produce high quality lowsulphur fuels. The technology and equipment have been selectedfrom the best available in the world to ensure quality and reliabilityof operation. Multiple units also allow for flexibility in operationenabling MRPL to processes 40 different types of crude at sametime. The main products produced by distillation of crude in themain plant and other secondary products are :

Theory: Distillation is the conversion of a mixture of substance into vapors which is afterwards condensed to the liquid form. It cans separation or purification of substances by taking advantage of differences in volatility. The purpose of this lab is comparing the efficiency of two distillation methods with the mixture of ethanol and 1-butanol. in theory the fractional distillation should be more efficient because of the steel sponge. The sponge acted as surface area for gas to condense on. This prevented some of the 1-butanol from condensing into the vial during fraction A because it would condense onto the sponge and drip back down into the flask. The boiling point of 1-butanol is higher than the boiling point of ethanol, so the cooler surface of the sponge helped condense 1-butanol, but the ethanol still made it to the vial because of its lower boiling point. The sponge helped improve efficiency of the distillation. We will use distillation plot and gas chromatography to test it.…

Fractional distillation is carried out by heating the petroleum to 400 °C. As every hydrocarbon in petroleum has it a particular boiling point, by doing so, they will separate out and then be collected. The portion that remains thick at 400 °C falls to the bottom of the tower is removed and forms bitumen or asphalt. The mixture of vapours that enters the fractional distillation tower starts to condense as the temperature cools the higher the gases go.…

    Distillation

In the following project we are discussing about distillation. The operation of the distillation is employed for the purification of liquids from non-volatile impurities. The liquid is heated to the vapor phase and then is collected and recondensed to give back the pure liquid .The non-volatile impurities are left behind in the flask. Here our main focus will be at the fractional distillation. It is the process in which we separate the different components of a mixture on the basis of the difference in their boiling points. When their boiling points differ by more than 10°C.It is mainly use for the mixture of components having less boiling point difference. When the liquids present in the mixture have their boiling points close to each other (i.e. less than 10°C) the separation is best effected by fitting the distillation flask with the fractionating column. In this process a fractionating tower is used. The mixture is preheated and converted into the vapor form and then allowed to enter the fractionating tower. The temperature in fractionating tower differs with the height. Fractionating tower is provided with the different tray like shelves where different fractions having different condensation temperatures are obtained. Although the products obtained from this technique is not 100% pure. Every fraction obtained from the distillation column still contains some impurity of the fraction lower to it. These are separated and if more purification is required the distillate is redistilled. The main application of fractional distillation is in the petroleum industry. This technique is best suited for crude oil refining.…

Kruger & Ramphal (2009: 232) defines Material requirements planning (MRP) as “a computer-based information system used to schedule and order dependent-demand inventories.” Independent demand is demand for final products whereas dependent demand is demand for items that are subassemblies or component parts to be used in production of finished goods. In simpler terms, MRP is a production planning process that begins with the demand for finished products, and then plans the production step by step, of subassemblies and parts.…

    | Distillation is defined as: `Distillation is based on the fact that the vapor of a boiling mixture will be richer in the components that have lower boiling points. Therefore, when this vapor is cooled and condensed, the condensate will contain more volatile components. At the same time, the original mixture will contain more of the less volatile material. Distillation columns are designed to achieve this separation efficiently.Although many people have a fair idea what “distillation” means, the important aspects that seem to be missed from the manufacturing point of view are that:…
